You want to know what to do? Seriously? Don't go back to sleep. Also, the first thing that I do after a nightmare makes a big difference in how I deal with my nightmare, my day, etc. I used to wake up saying, "Oh my GOD! What a nightmare!" and I'd start out my waking hours in a panic. Now I say, "Woo! Thank GOD is was only a nightmare!" This second saying puts me in a better frame of mind.

The second thing I do is put on some coffee and light up a cigarette. Yes, smoking may be bad for my health, but it does seem to help me. Drinking coffee helps me wake me up, which puts my mind out of my dream world. All these things, plus having a positive attitude make my nighmare less scary.

Also, ask your doctor about a medication called Cyproheptadine. The drug removes the emotional attachment from a memory, which has greatly reduced the frequency and severity of panic attacks and nightmares. Best of luck.

Find a good book, especially one that is funny.
Write a letter to an old friend or relative that has been an important person in your life.
Take a nice warm, relaxing bath.

A nightmare could also be something you write down all that happened: could make for a good book someday, after all I hear a lot of Stephen King's book ideas have come from dreams.

Word of advice: don't smoke, drink, or take anything high in fats or caffeine before going to bed. Also, don't have the radio or TV on when you sleep, because, self consciously you are hearing all that goes on around you when you sleep, and could add to those nightmares.

Watch television, eat something, go outside, play around on the internet...anything but go back to sleep. If you can't sleep...why stay in bed. Do something that'll take your mind off the nightmare. By the time you finish doing stuff around your place...you'll be tired.

Wake up my husband and make him talk to me, well if he doesn't have to work in the morning. I rarely have nightmares that scare me out of sleep.

You get and log onto yahoo answers...that's what I did. Last night I was up with shortnes of breath after dreaming about an argument with my wife and boss. They were ganging up on me. Telling me I don't work enough.
