He told me that a lot of people who use thompsons find out a year later that they have to re-stain/re-seal. He said that the product dosen't last very long and it's not as good as the behr sealer that they sell. I was just curious about the truth of this. What has been you guys experience with Thompsons Advance or reg Thompsons.

Thompson makes a great product. If that is what you want, then use it. The thing is, with The Home Depot, they always push Behr. It is a good product too, but they push Behr because of the contract they have with the company.

Thompsons isn't a bad product, the reason they are pushing the Behr is because it is a little bit better (from my personal experiences did a second story to my Deck used the Behr, used Thompson on the original deck) Could have been the wood, but I just thought the Behr gave me a few more years of coating than the Thompsons.

I habe used the behr 6 year sealer on a deck and it works great and will last at least 4 years (I moved after 4 years), however you have to apply it by had or buy or rent a paint sprayer to do it the easy way and the $90 paint sprayer I bought to apply the behr was pretty much shot after the first use. I used the cheaper thompsons wood protector on my fence and was pleased with the result but it only lasted a 9 or so months and has no UV protector in it, but it is much quicker and easier to apply with a cheap garden sprayer. In the long run it would be cheaper to use the behr to begin with because it will last at least 4 years, instead of reapplying the thompsons year after year.

I used Thompsons years ago with good results. What I am reading in the DIY sites I visit is that it is no longer very good. Many are going to Cabot products. The amount of pigments in any paint or stain is what makes it last longer.

I personally have not had any problems with Thompsons Waterseal. I have used it on my porches, I am currently putting it on my split rail fence. I reapply every 2 - 3 years, just like it is reccommended!
