Wearing hats indoors just came up earlier today too. So here is a copy of what I replied there:

I know it's an etiquette rule but I too have never understood the reasons behind it. It's not a health issue; think about it, they require food workers with long hair to wear a cap or hair net to *avoid* spreading lice, hairs etc. It might stem from men wanting to be able to look each other in the eye while talking and not wearing big-brimmed hats, however if you tip your hat back or if you don't have a big brim to start with, you can still look each other in the eye even when wearing a hat.

Personally, I am often all for following *most* etiquette rules since most of them make sense & make living together a bit more pleasant, however I have lived for several years in Colorado and Texas... it got quite hot there so guys' hair underneath their hat was often sweaty & sticky. I could never understand how this etiquette rule has survived hot Texas summers! I'd *much* rather see a nice, clean hat than hair that's all sweaty and plastered to their head where the brim was, however whenever some guy left their hat on in a restaurant or the college cafeteria there'd always be someone commenting and telling him to take it off... Really, as long as you have a nice-looking hat and don't pull the brim down over your eyes, there's no sense in this rule I've been able to find. It should be done away with, especially in summer!

This is a very old tradition, that it shows respect for the place or person if, when he enters, a man removes his headgear.

I have heard it said that this tradition began back in the days when knights in armour would remove their helmets, thus allowing their faces to be seen. This showed respect for the people whose premises they entered, and also proved they had trust for those people, as it left the head defenceless.

Over time, this has simply become a custom, so that today most people just accept that you should take off your hat when you enter from outside.

If correct, it also explains why women are not expected to do the same ~ women were not knights with armour in those old times.

Best wishes :-)

When I was brought up men took their hats off as soon as they entered any building. Today it is sickening they have no manners and even sit at the dinner table with a baseball hat on. It is common etiquitte to remove your hat.

Due to gang activity, certain hats and colors indicate a person's gang--also, people can hide weapons and other things (drugs, etc.) in their hats so clubs are trying to crack down on both.

Because it is considered rude to wear a hat inside. Unless it is a woman's dress hat to wedding, funeral or church.

It is to curb the gang related activities. Certain colors are also not allowed at bars where I live. In fact a few of the bars around here do not let you in if your shirt is not tucked in or if your pants are lower than your waist.
