I have heard that from now on, you can expect to pay £400 per year road tax for 4x4 vehicles. Is this for all types ?

No.
I have a Jeep (3.7 litre V6) and pay less than some 2 litre cars. It is entirely dependant on the CO2 emission measured but the 'green' boys would have you believe otherwise.

No. The tax is based on CO2 emissions, so only the big "chelsea tractors" will pay top whack.

If you have something like, say, a Daihatsu Terios, or Fiat Panda 4x4, you should be ok.

A blanket rule covering just 4x4 vehicles would be almost impossible to implement, because some cars now have switchable drive systems, allowing 2 wheel drive in everyday situations, such as the Suzuki SX4.

No.

All cars, whether 4x4 or not, are taxed according to the same criteria: date of first registration, and then either engine size or CO2 emissions.

Cars first registered before 1st March 2001 are charged based on engine size (£115/year for cars not over 1549cc, £180/year for cars over 1549cc).

Cars first registered after 1st March 2001 are taxed according to CO2 emissions (as measured on the official EC Combined Cycle test, not in real world conditions).

The new Band G for vehicles emitting more than 225g/km of CO2 (which costs £300 this year, and will cost £400 from March next year) only applies to vehicles first registered on or after 23rd March 2006.
