Some dogs go through a longer chewy phase than others. And, unfortunately, some dogs never grow out of it.

My pit bull did that for years. He's now 3 and has finally stopped chewing on things - but before that, nothing was beyond him - except people and other dogs.

My solution was to first dog-proof my home as best I could - that meant anything I didn't want chewed went into closets or drawers or on shelves he couldn't reach. I sprayed bitter apple and chew stop on the furniture regularly - religiously in fact. That helped a lot.

Then I would go to the thrift store and yard sales for cheap things for him to chew up. And I went to the local tennis court and picked up the "dead" balls for him too.

And I was patient.

Now he's an adult - and has finally grown out of the chewy stage. But it took years of patience and cheap, yard sale toys.

JRT are very active dogs as you know. How much exercise does he get, a hour walk or let out in the yard? That is not enough, he needs at least an hour, per day, of off leash exercise at a dog park or with some doggy friends.Maybe a doggy daycare? Swimming is great too. Rhino bones by Nylabone and the reg. Nylabones are hard to destroy as are sterilized bones. Go to an online pet catalog such as K V Vet or Drs. Foster and Smith to see their selection.

Here try this place and their toys.
www.PlanetDog.com

Their toys are guaranteed and if your dog destroys even the toys made for agressive chewers they will replace them.

They rate their toys on a scale of 1 to 5. 5 being for the most agressive chewers. Now I have 2 big Goldens and they have not been able to distroy their toys. I have the same toys here for 3 years.
Take a look.

Jack Russell Terriers are hunting dogs. Originally bred to hunt rats and burrowing animals, their instincts tell them to hunt and kill prey. So they "kill" their toys. Especially toys that squeak. If they make a noise, they aren't "dead" till they stop squeaking. Keep giving him those hard butcher bones, but not too hard. Don't want to damage his teeth. Basically just keep supplying him with toys that he will probably destroy. When he gets to be around 2 years old, he will mellow out and stop being so destructive.

Here is another place to try. They even guarantee that if your dog can destroy the toy, that they will replace it for free.
