I've heard from some vets that it is not good for the dogs to go bathing when it's warm cause they can get into some kind of shock? I didn't quite understand it cause I thought that water cools them down and makes it easier for them to manage with heat outside. Is there someone who can tell me if it's ok to take my dog for a swim, or not?

I think you have things mixed up a bit. Dog can swim when its warm or even hot out side. It is not advisabe to take a over heated dog and then plunge it into cold water. It can send the dog into shock. It can even stop the dogs heart. But if your with your dog and the river current isn't strong then you both can go for a swim. I think with a river I'd put a long leash on the dog just in case he swims out to far and gets into trouble this way you can control how far out he swims.

Depends on the water, some shallow areas can be heated by the sun so be quite warm. Test the water yourself to see it temp. If it is bath water hot then it won't cool the dogs down.

My brother in laws dog goes swimming twice a day
winter and summer,he cannot stop him from doing
this as it seems the dog loves it.
Your vet must not know the habits or the breeding of
some dogs that are specifically bred to go in water
such as various breeds of gun dogs.

Should be fine to let your dog swim in the river as long as the water isn't cold.

I think your vet is full of BS...no offence to him/her!

Of course your dog can go swimming when it is hot. There is no better exercise than swimming when the weather is warm.

It's fine as long as the current isn't too strong for them. I have Labs and they're all water dogs. In fact, I have a child's wading pool for them in my back yard and they love it. They are so funny to watch!
