I'm going to Germany on holiday but stopping at Amsterdam for a few days as well. Can anyone tell me phrases in Dutch like:
Hello
Please
Thank you
How are you?

etc
I'm sure a lot of people speak English there but I think it's polite to learn some phrases if you're going to a different country. Thanks x

Here are some of the basic things you will need to know and remember you will need to listen to the sounds on some internet site in order to get the pronounciation right, dutch people can be very unfriendly but as soon as they realize you are tryin to talk their language they have much respect for you, trust me , i am one ...

hello = hello
please = asseblief
thank you = dank u
my name is = mijn naam is
nice to meet you = aardig om u te ontmoeten
can you help me = kunt u me helpen
i am looking for = ik zoek
i am here on holliday = ik bin hier op holly
eveythng is fine, thank you = alles is fijn dankt u

HOPE YOU ENJOY IT and when they get grumpy just smile and walk away

dag!
alstublieft
bedankt (haartelij bedankt if youre really pleased)
hoe gaat het met u?

if you need to apologise you can say "sorry, hoor" (really, its true and quite correct!!)

it may be true that loads of dutch people speak english, but isnt it a bit rude to assume this? they have a language of their own after all. So you are right thats its polite to make a bit of an effort, and it will be appreciated

Don't bother! You might like to brush up your Lancashire accent. They've been receiving Coronation Street since the early 70s.
