No way, they made a mistake. I would not pay it until I made positively sure the major alterations could be done and in time. I once had a dress that a lady told me she would not alter in certain places because of the intricate bead work. And if the bridal boutique is the one doing the alterations, I would demand a discount on the alterations. The more work you have to do on a dress, the more it costs.

Chances are they ordered a bigger size with good reason. Most of the time the dresses on the rack have been tried on by a multitude of brides and have stretched ... in order to have a dress come in and still fit they sometimes go up a size to account for the stretching. The boutique won't begin alterations until you pay for the dress, so I would definitely suggest you pay the balance if you want it to be done in time. Keep in mind that this dress is going to fit you perfectly b/c of the alterations that will be done. It is going to fit like a glove :)

If they ordered the wrong size then I would not pay them until the alterations are complete and you are sure that it looks correct. If you needed a 4 and they ordered a 6 it's not a big deal, but if you needed a 4 and they ordered a 14 then I would be a little upset. If this is the case and there is beading, embrodery etc. on the dress it may be hard to alter and they may just want to order a new one if time permits!

Hi the dress doesnt have to fit they will adjust it for you nearer the wedding, im getting married in 3 weeks and my dress has been payed for and has sat in the briadal shop since last september, obviously when the dress in the size she ordered me which is alway for every bride going to be bigger, I tried it on and it was too big, perfect for alterations to hopefully fit my body correctly. I go for my fitting on the 3rd of July and I get married on the 14th of july this year. And my dress needs altering too, they have to order a bigger size to get it too fit to your body, Trust me everything is fine and its ok to pay immediatly. We did ,and then its up to them to fit it for you nearer the time but there is an extra charge for this. But it shouldnt be too much. Its best to have a dress that is too big that can be fitted to you than having it not fit in someplaces and in others.
Sometimes its in the bridal policy they have that if you dont pay when they say then they send the dress back or something before any alterations have been done. I know I had a week to pay the balance in full, and it had to be payed.

If you paid for a size A and they give you size B, do not pay the balance until you get size A. To me it should be up to them to pay for either getting the correct size dress OR pay for the alterations needed.

They ordered the wrong size therefore I would either tell them to return it and order the correct size (if time allows) or if not ask them to pay for the alterations as a goodwill gesture seen as the mistake is theirs and say you will pay the balance when this has been done and make sure they put it in writing.

I would suggest you pay the balance on the dress you ordered when you receive the dress you ordered.
If I were in your shoes, I'd take my receipt, along with every copy of everything they've given me to date back to the store, show them what was ordered - that you signed (and thus agreed to) and paid a deposit on and tell them that they need to correct the situation. Immediately.
Calmly, but firmly, tell them that the dress needs to be rushed, and you won't be paying for the fees necessary to expedite.
If they are unwilling to accommodate you, I would ask them (again, calmly, but firmly) who you need to speak to, then, because SOMEONE has the authority to prove this. If that means you speak to the regional manager, so be it. Be persistent.
If the store is reputable, they should acknowledge their mistake and work with you.

Did they order the wrong size or did they go up a size? A lot of times they will order up a size or two and alter it to perfectly fit you, which is not an uncommon practice, and it usually assumed is not covered in the actual cost of the dress. If this is your situation, it's pretty normal. I fit into one size and they ordered the next size up to have it fit perfectly, as they did with my sister's wedding gown.

Never! Tell them to order the correct size as you are not paying out more money to get it altered and you will then pay the balance! If you do not have time to wait for another one and altering it would be quicker, tell them you will deduct the alteration fee from the balance. This is their mistake and you should not have to pay out more for it.

It's their mistake not yours. They should be doing the alterations free of charge. Speak with your local Citizens Advice Bureau or similar wherever you live. Threaten to sue them, or as a last alternative expose the company to the local newspaper . This is their mistake and it is up to the company to rectify matters. Don't let them tramp all over you. You are the one paying and they are in the wrong.
