Ibuprofen to reduce swelling; and sitting on ice packs. The swelling needs to be reduced to let the nerve go. Worked for me. It was terrible, terrible pain for months. Then when I started continuously sitting on two or three frozen gel packs along my back, buttocks, hip, and leg...that is what made the difference. I had two more bouts of it and now don't get it at all. You must be diligent about the ice, off and on around the clock for a few days. I even lined up the ice packs in my bed when I went to sleep.

I agree with both answers above. In addition to that you can schedule acupuncture to help manage the pain until your surgery. Have you considered deep tissue massage and chiropractic adjustments to relief the pressure on the nerve prior to committing to surgery. I always feel surgery should be the last resort as such a low percentage of back surgeries are successful enough to leave the patient pain free.

Deep tissue massage therapy can do wonders for sciatic pain. I recommend you get a massage as soon as possible you will probably feel relief immediately. If you get a series of these like once a week you will notice a big difference.
