There is a great misconception by some of the people answering here about the term 'Nighthawks' and how it applies to this painting.
At the time that Edward Hopper painted this now famous painting the term 'Nighthawk', as it was applied to humans, was a term giving to any person who, for whatever reasons, did not keep normal working hours, who did not do the 'nine to five' day job, sleep at night routine.
'Nighthawks' was a term that was applied to newspaper reporters, nurses, cops, waitresses, theater ticket takers, etc., who worked the late shift, who got to bed as most people were waking up, etc.
That did not mean they were evil or up to no good nor did it mean they were immoral. It simply meant that, for one reason or another, their job or lifestyle did not let them live 'normal' lives. For years I was an investigator, often working very late hours, often taking breaks at all-night restraints or dinners. There were always a few other people at these all-night dinners who also had odd hours and work late shifts. They came to the all-night dinners and bars to eat, to catch up with the news and most likely to mingle with other humans before they went home to sleep during the day.
What Hopper painted was a small group of 'nighthawks' who happened to be at an all night dinner at the same time. If it reflects anything about our society during that time it showed that even people with odd-ball lifestyles and late-night jobs could still find company, still find comparable kindred spirits, even late at night. What the painting shows is that, even in the dark stillness of the middle of the night, such people can still find companionship.

You have to look at the picture. It is a wonderful painting. Look at what is there. The people, the place, the time. Not only that look at what is not there. Notice that it is bizzare that there is hardly anyone around. The whole scene that is lighted is the cafe. It's titled nighthawks. They are creatures that prey on the weak in the night. The question is who is the nighthawk. The woman or the men. It's all about lonliness.
I don't want to give you too much. Now that you know the basics try to feel the painting and interact with it. We have experienced loneliness at one time or another. Let it flow from within and the writing will take on a life of it's own. You will begin to notice things you didn't realize were there. I wish you well young writer.

I had a very similar assignment in college. We first read a book of poems based on Hoppers paintings, then we required to write our own poem. Here is a link to the book on amazon. I highly recommend owning it.
The Poetry of Solitude: A Tribute to Edward Hopper, by Gail Levin.

This has to be my most favorite painting in the world. If I were rich, I would pay whatever it takes to own it. I think you need to look closely at the picture and describe what it makes you think of. For me, it shows a group of people who are in a public place together, yet are utterly alone. Are they lonely, as well? Maybe. It also makes me think, for some reason, of New York - it is very obviously an urban scene, not someplace in rural Nebraska! The picture probably means something different to each person who views it. Your best bet is to really look at it and write about what it makes you think of. Good luck. Whoever gave you this assignment is a good teacher, in my opinion.

I think if I was writing this I would start by saying that this picture perfectly characterizes all the elements by which one would recognize a painting by Hopper. I would list them - loneliness, alienation, mystery. and anything else you want to stress.
And then I would describe the painting , its composition (see link below); his use of color to express mood. At this link u will also find connections to Art Deco and Film Noir (in blue writing) and can also quote what Hopper had to say about what had inspired him to paint this picture.

So many things going on there, as with most of his work. Some of his main themes were isolation and I think there's kind of a cool outside perspective of peering into the lives of the subjects in his work. He also creates some really interesting contrasts of color and shadow. I really like this one http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/hopper/interior/hopper.summer-evening.jpg
