Maybe a card. Many times they specify "no gifts". I might get them a gift certificate for a good restaurant. I've only been married 30 years (6-24-77), but we certainly don't need more junk.

When I renewed my wedding vows I requested no gifts. We don't need anything, I doubt your friends do either. However, if you have any pictures of them as a couple or even separate, that would make a nice gift. I wish I had pictures of my husband when he was younger. You could get them a gift certificate to a restaurant or an activity that they enjoy like bowling or the movies.

I think after 40 years, they deserve some nice gifts. I would recommend anything that you could give at a wedding bc after 40 years everything you have is not nice and new anymore. Another idea would be a gift card to a restaurant or store that you know they like. That way they can spend even more quality time together.

They are probably not expecting or wanting anything except your being present at the party.
If you wanted to give something beyond a card, maybe a certificate to their favorite restaurant, or an item from the year they got married, an old photograph of them, or an album.

no smart comments from me, people who have managed to stay together for 40 years deserve something special can you get hold of any of their old photos that would remind them of their life together you could put them in order and into a really nice photo album and leave some space at the end for them to put in more

That depends on what your relationship is with them. It's hard to find something they might not have already, so try to think of something you know they would enjoy, but would never think to get for themselves. Welcome mat with the family name, Vanity plates for the vehicles, Tickets to a show, gift card from their favorite restraint or hot spot,...just try to be original and not buy them the same old boring "list" item that everyone else it. Your originality will be appreciated as long as you don't go overboard.

ask if they are registered? probably not, cuz they have all the stuff they need unless they need new stuff by now!!! otherwise if you think they expect a gift ask them, better yet ask their kids if they expect gifts and if so what? a nice dinner out paid by you would be real nice (best restaurant in town !!!)
