Ali is the greatest!!!! He lost 3 years of his prime when he was not allowed to box for refusing to go to the Vietnam War because of his religious beliefs. He was undefeated when those 3 years were taken away. When he lost his 1st fight to Joe Frazier, Ali had a few warm up fights & then fought Frazier who was undefeated & had been fighting that whole 3 years Ali was stagnant. If those 3 years wouldn't have been stripped he would have pumelled Frazier the same way he did in the two victories over Frazier. He also destroyed the unbeatable Sonny Liston twice, he beat the unbeatable George Foreman. He took a thunderous left hook from Joe Frazier late in the 1st fight & got up like he just slipped. I've never seen him in trouble & late in his career when his legs weren't what they used to be he could take unbearable punishment & comeback & win. The only heavyweight that would be a contest in his prime would be Joe Louis. Someone mentioned Rocky Marciano he would have beaten Marciano silly just like when he fought Liston & people didn't realize his size & speed was too much for the smaller & slower Liston. Rocky was a punching bag that never stopped but he also never fought anyone with the speed, endurance & boxing IQ of Ali. NO CONTEST, ALI IS THE GREATEST!!!!!

Ali is one of the greatest half dozen or so boxers ever. All of them on the right day could probably beat each other. Ali's reputation is largely a media creation though. He lost a lot of fights - more than any of the others that rank up there with him. What upsets me is that people just blindly say he's the greatest. Just because he and Howard Cosell said it enough times, doesn't make it true. You will have kids answer this question in favor of Ali that have not seen one of his fights. It's a media phenomenon that just keeps growing. In ten years Ali will be able to beat the rest of the top ten while being handcuffed and dangled upside down on a bungi cord.

I think its pretty much fact that Ali was the best for boxing he took the sport to the next level. In my opinion he probably the best Heavyweight ever, i think its incredible harsh saying he had no knockout power, he was far from a devastating one punch KO artist but he had a very hard and very quick punch and usally threw them in burst of 3 and 4's! I think probably Roberto Duran was the best and most gifted fighter of all time never lost in his own weight class moved up 5 and 6 divisions to fight great fighters like Hearns and Haggler and even beat Leanord a fantastic feat when it comparable in today's game someone like Mayweather moving up threw the weights and fighting a man the size and skill of a Roy Jones Jr in his prime!! I doubt that we will ever see such a thing again.

Ali is definitely the greatest heavyweight. As far as pound for pound, I would probably go with Ray Robinson, but Ali could be considered the greatest in an arguable way.

without question, muhummad ali was the greatest, quality of opposition and historical impact he dominated the 1960s and the 1970s when the heavyweight division was at its peak in competition, he against fighters like archie moore, floyd patterson, sonny liston, ernie terrell, george chuvalo, cleveland williams, zora folley, joe fraizer, jimmy ellis, jerry quarry, oscar bonavena, george foreman, ken norton, ron lyle, jimmy young, earnie shavers, larry holmes, bob foster, some of these names were ranked by ring magazine as the 50 greatest heavyweight fighters ever to compete and that says it all about the man and the legend.
