The breeding instinct is triggered in part by the longer daylight hours of spring. Controlling the amount of light your birds are exposed to, mimicing longer or short days can control their egg laying to a certain extent.

OH BOY, The UV rays are absorbed by the birds which are then turned into vitamin D3. Which are then turned into calcium in the bird.

BTW, UV rays do not go through glass. You can use artificial light with birds but it must be a UV-B bulbs.
