M16 Rifle

Deter and, if necessary, compel adversaries by enabling individuals and small units to engage targets with accurate, lethal, direct fire.

Entered Army Service
1964

Description and Specifications
A lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed rifle designed for either automatic or semi-automatic fire through use of a selector lever. There are four variants - the M-16A1/A2/A3/A4. The M-16A2 incorporates improvements in iron sight, pistol grip, stock and overall combat effectiveness.

Accuracy is enhanced by incorporating an improved muzzle compensator, three-round burst control, and a heavier barrel; and by using the heavier NATO-standard ammunition, which is also fired by the squad automatic weapon. The M-16A3 is identical to the M-16A2 but has a removable carrying handle that is mounted on a Picatinny Rail (for better mounting of optics) and is without burst control. The M-16A4 is identical to the M-16A2 except for the removable carrying handle and Picatinny Rail.

Caliber: 5.56 mm
Weight: 8.8 lbs (includes sling & one loaded magazine)
Range: 800 meters for an area target / 550 meters for a point target

The M-16 is a 5.56 mm Round and it's max effective range is around 350 to 400 Yards. It is gas operated and there are several versions made for the military. However, the Military is looking to replace the M16 in the very near future.

The M-16A2 is the current standard infantry weapon of the US Army and Marine Corps.

It fires the NATO 5.56 MM cartridge.

While it is a 40 year old Eugene Stoner design at it's core it has been thoroughly updated and the A2 variant is relatively new.

It will fire semi-automatic and in 3 round automatic bursts and no longer will fire fully automatic.

The accepted kill range is 300 Metres but most sights are set for 100Metres.

It can mount the M203 40MM grenade launcher(sweet)

Standard magazines are 20 round but only lod 15 rounds or the springs will wear out. Odd but true.

I'll answer the question I think you're asking. You see the M-16 everywhere, or a member of it's family, because it's a family of firearms. It started back in the '60s with a design by a famous guy named Eugene Stoner(I know, right?). He designed a rifle to catch up to European firearms design, with plastic parts, light weight and a smaller bullet than the US military had been using, although the design started with a heavier bullet. Problem was, the action pushed a lot of gas and carbon debris into the chamber where all the moving parts were, and there wasn't alot of room in there 'cuz it was designed that way, so they started to jam alot. In combat, which is bad. They've made some good modifications, but the weapon is still prone to jamming if you don't keep it clean. It's called alot of things, like the CAR-15, AR15, M4 carbine, M-16A2, and so on because they're all variants. Most of the guns you see guys carrying 'downrange' in Iraq or Afghanistan are M4s with stuff strapped on all over them so that is obscures what they look like, but the receivers all look the same. Heckler and Koch recently came up with their own version called the 416, and it ostensibly fixes all the problems of the design. Too bad we're not buying that thing in numbers.

As for the bullet, it's called .223 Remington in the civilian market, 5.56x45mm NATO in the service. It's considered a varmint round suitable for nuisances like prairie dogs and coyotes, known for flat trajectory and good velocity in barrels longer than 20 inches. Problem is, most fighting carbines have 16 inch barrels, and that takes away from the power of the round, which is a problem we've been seeing in theater. Out of a 20 inch barrel, you can get good accuracy out to 300 meters and beyond, with decent accuracy out to 500 meters, depending on the good ol' boy shooting it. With good optics, that extends out farther, but the round loses out against physics around 700 meters or so.

the m16 was the workhorse of the us military since around the vietnam era. its time is done now and is being fazed out of use . it will be replaced with the barrett 6.68 looks similiar in design but packs more punch behind its hit with its heavier bullet and increased range. the problem with the 5.56 round is that its accuracy is through the rooof but doesnt pack much kinetic energy behind its punch. for example,,remember that line in blackhawk down "hey grimes stay away from the walls" in the dvd the true story of blackhawk down soldiers explained that the bullets,,which were flying everywhere lack suitable penetration aspects in comparison the ak 47 and had a tendancy to follow the walls not penetrate when hit with the 5.56. so that explains why the m16 is slowly going to be replaced.
here's a link that shows the m16 in its first design to present day.
