it's the metal piece that usually comes with the cd player to keep it from falling out of place

just imagine the cd player. the metal piece im asking about is the metal piece that the cd player goes through and you install that in the dash mount. i tried looking under dash kit too and that wasn't it. it's like a rectangular piece of metal that keeps the in dash stereo from falling into the dash. thanks! =D

Just get a mounting kit specific for your vehicle, and install the whole thing new.

Most after-market parts suppliers will call it a "mounting sleeve". Here's a link to an Alpine version found at www.partstore.com:
http://www.partstore.com/Part/Alpine+Electronics+Inc/Alpine/CDA7949/Alpine+Electronics+Inc/Alpine/15D50406W01/New.aspx

You should be able to find the one you need by entering your brand and model number on the same site.

Good luck!

P.S. In many vehicles, you can install the deck securely without using the mounting sleeve. Many import vehicles use an ISO-mount setup, which uses side brackets instead of the sleeve. For many other vehicles, you can find mounting kits that duplicate the ISO-mount design, so the deck can be secured without the mounting sleeve. If you send me an e-mail with your vehicle year and model, I might be able to suggest some installation methods.

For those who answered below:
Mounting sleeves are included with the deck. They're not included with the mounting kit. Each manufacturer uses its own sleeve design, so they're not interchangeable. And many mounting kits still require the mounting sleeve to mount the deck, so buying a kit isn't a cure-all when you don't have a sleeve.

well I always call it the sleeve. It has a box shape and is metal (sheet metal) and has the connection the radio makes in the back of it. It makes a connection for the radio and in the other side of the connection is a bunch of wires with a plug on it to hook up to your car. This slides in the square hole in the dash. You also have a strap that will mount to the under side of your dash. I hope this helps.

A bracket? Mount? Clip?

Or possibly a DIN chassis? If you mean a dash mounted radio.

I wouldn't bother looking for that one piece , save yourself the time and buy an entire new DIN Kit. It's only about 15 bucks and will include the piece with it.

Well it is called a cage and it could be still around your head unit. It slides on and off of your head unit if the stereo isn't installed in your car.
