I know many girls when they are young say that. However, do many girls use this line just to reject the approaches of a guy?

It sounds like: "I've recently put up with a lot of mess and I don't really want to deal with any drama right now"...that doesn't mean she doesn't like you! It means she's tired of whatever she's been dealing with, mainly guys...so don't get discouraged because she might end up feeling differently later. I don't think it's saying she doesn't want to be tied down....don't give up, but give her the space she needs for as long as she needs it...

I can't speak for every girl since each one of us is different. I tell guys I want to be single because I meant it. I don't see any point in using that line to reject someone. I like to be honest in the things I do.

I used that phrase when I was approached by guys I wasn't attracted to, so yes, it's definitely a hint of rejection.
But some girls might say it as a way of defending themselves because they are ashamed of the status of being single.....

I would say anytime a girl says anything other than, "Sure, I will go out with you," it is rejection.

It depends, sometimes it is but sometimes it is the truth. I don't use that line but I can see were some would. I think that sometimes quite a few do use that but it really depends on the girl.

No underlining meaning necessarily. Sometime people just don't want to get tied down until they find the right person. Sometimes they just want to have the freeedom to do whatever they please. Obviously you were not the right one for them, or they would have changed their mind.
