Not that I have any problems with the Christian Americans participating in Iraq, I consider them brave. But I do wonder can they fight in the front line without conflicting with one of the Ten commandments

Dear Lin Gai Va,

The commandment to not murder also carries with it a heart to take away life from another. Remember that God looks at our heart.

For anyone who is a soldier or policeman i think they are put in a position where they may have to- but not really desiring to. It's just a necessary thing. It's kind of like if someone broke into your house and endangered your family- it would be necessary to protect them and you may even harm someone in the process of self-defense though in your heart you have no desire to be taking someone's life away- it was necessary to preserve life and freedom.

It's a tough line and one a Christian has to individually workout with God. i don't know if i would have it in me to kill someone- so i don't own a gun. But i know if my house was ever robbed i would do everything i could to protect my family even if it meant giving my own life first- i'd beg for them to release my family and take me as a hostage, etc.

Hope that makes sense and helps. Kindly,

Nickster

The commandment "Thou shall not kill' is actually talking about murder and it has nothing to do with war time. If that was the case, then God himself would be hypocritical when he informed the people of Israel through his prophets to slaughter the non-believers of Canaan. And we know as Christians that God is not a hypocrite. War time is not just about killing the enemy. It is also about defending yourself and others from tyranny. It is a fight for freedom and security. Unfortunately, some take it too literally and refuse to defend themselves. Christ himself even commanded his disciples to take with them a purse and a sword to defend themselves.

P.S.: To Nickster
I do agree with what you wrote. No soldier or police officer looks to shoot and kill someone. A law enforcement officer usually warns the perpetrator and if not heeded and is in danger, the officer will use deadly force. A person in the military is government property and voluntarily so. They know that at anytime they will be put in harms way. When that time comes, they know they have a job to do. They hope that the enemy will surrender before life has to be taken. In most cases the latter happens. We are all children of God, yet some resort to evil deeds and they must be dealt with. Do you think that a true christian soldier celebrated the deaths of Hitler, Mussolini, Hussein, Pol Pot, and other evil doers? No, we prayed for them to realize the error of their ways. We just know that justice was done.

If it's done in the name of God or Jesus, it's okay.
