I'd definitely go with Pioneer. Wait, I already have! Pioneer's high end stuff would slaughter sony. Pioneer invests far more money into audio technologies as that's primarily what they do. Sony spreads out over a wider range of areas, all of which take from the same budget. If you just want something mediocre though, I suppose you could take either one; mediocre is only mediocre.

I have had surround sounds/Home theaters for yrs now and i have had several receivers and so far i LOVE this sony i have now but i like kenwood speakers with it....the Sony head(receiver) just has more options than some of the other noname brands meaning how it runs the types of audio 2ch 5 ch stereo surround and so on.......also another difference is how ur source video(what ur watching) plays thru it....some heads wont let u run video thru the head meaning u will have to change channels or signals to ur tv...sony lets u run multiple sources thru the head then all u have to do is press whatever button u want o view or hear.....i.e....if u want o watch a dvd then hit the dvd button then hit the tv/sat button for tv or sat then hit the cd button to hear cd if u have a sep one and so on......SONY is DEFINITELY the way to go and trust me i will never go with anything else again....

Neither.
Go with an Onkyo, Denon, or Yamaha receiver. All three make very good bang for the buck A/V receivers between $300 and $600.
A DVD player.......go with anything brand name. Avoid the $35 off brands at Walmart. Make sure they have digital outputs, DTS decoding, etc.
Speakers.......this is where at least 2/3 of your budget should go towards. Look at Klipsch, Paradigm, or Boston Acoustics for decent midrange bookshelf or tower speakers.
Avoid Yamaha, Sony, other no names speakers and Bose.

If you can afford the Pioneer, go for it. Per my knowledge (which *might* be outdated by now), Pioneer is more towards "expert-stuff", which usually is more lasting. It's not impossible to find some 10-20 years old Pioneer's stuff that still works 100% (with exception of with newer CDs that got all that "copy-protection"-sheep that prevent's older stuff playing them).

Hi there. Is this for a HTIB (home theatre in a box). They are pretty much all the same.Because of the relatively low price of these units quality is sacrificed for convenience. If you can afford it buy separate components for a much better system.
