good question... mm how about i put down the ones that i despise first and foremost
1. Paul Keating- almost bought this country to its knees with the recession we had to have
2. Bob hawke- a bigot and frankly a failure as a leader
3. Robert Mezies- introduced the taxation system to australia as only a temporary measure during WW2
4. Harold holt - implemented decimal currency to this country and overnight wiped out 8 cents in every dollar be it in shares or pay packets.
ok my fav- Andrew Fisher who typical of a steven bradbury gold medal was handed the pm role (1st time around) when alfred deakin resigned his governement- and in fact is the only prime minister apart from the famous malcolm fraser episode (the sacking of the whitlam as pm by the governor general) to hold government with a minority...
a bit of history for you... lol
oh and apart from a few slip ups johnny is holding his own, not to say he is doing a great job but passable none the less...

Curtin, without question.
There have been many reasonable to good Prime Ministers. Of the PMs since Curtin, the Labor PMs stand out. Chiffley, Whitlam, Hawke and Keating were all good. Whitlam was flawed but had some greatness. Menzies was good at the start but stayed too long. Frank Forde and Black Jack Mckewan don't count. Gorton was good, Holt was a brown noser, McMahon was a doddery old fool, Fraser was not too bad as PM but I didn't like how he got there and cheered his demise. I have a lot of respect for him today though. Little Lying Johnny is not the worst PM we have had and he is certainly not the best but he is far and away the nastiest.

John Curtin
Here is a PM who had to make a hard decision with regards to the defence of Australia. Australian soldiers were viewed as cannon fodder in the European theatre for the defence of England. Curtin recalled the troops to defend against the Japanese who were fast closing in on Australia.
British defence policy was to let Australia fall for the defence of England. Curtin ignored Churchill, turned to Roosevelt and had the US as allies in the Pacific theatre. The Japanese were turned away and Australia was saved.

In modern times Hawke and Keating are the PMs, and Keating was Treasurer, who had the guts to begin the economic reforms that underpin the economic success of our current government (reforms that Howard, as Fraser's treasurer knew were necessary but did not have the courage to implement)
