Is a chemical compound that is added in small amounts to a solution so that the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of the solution can be determined easily. Hence a pH indicator is a chemical detector for hydronium ions (H3O+) (or Hydrogen ions (H+) in the Arrhenius model).

Indicators are chemicals added to other solutions or products to determine the presence of specific substances. Besides the pH indicators mentioned above, IKI turns a dark blue-black color in the presence of starch. Also when hydrogen peroxide is placed on samples of earth, if organic material is present, you get bubbles of oxygen released.

In chemistry, they are compounds used to identify other unknown compounds and/or elements by the byproduct or result of thier reaction with those in question. For example litmus paper is an "indicator" of acidity ( I think acids cause it to turn purple and based cause it to turn red-or vice versa).
