PROS
-Good family city. If you have a family with young children, then you will enjoy the atmosphere. Sacramento seems like it was made for young families.

-Lots of different ethnicities here. If you enjoy living around a variety of people, Sacramento is the place for you.

-Cheaper than the Bay Area

-Close to the Bay Area and to the mountains, so you can take a day trip with no problems

CONS:
-Allergies! The air in Sac gets downright dirty and springtime is awful for those with allergies. You won't know you have allergies until you move to Sac.

-Summers. If you like the heat, Sac is the place for you. 100+ degree days are the norm.

-Traffic. The public transportation sucks. Sac is so spread out that it takes hours to travel from one side of town to the other. With that being said, you have to drive. It seems like every bad driver has now come to live in Sac. The freeways aren't big enough, they're raggedy, and they are forever congested. Not as bad as LA, but still.

-No real nightlife. Sacramento's nightlife consists of bars, bars that college students frequent. If you're out of school and want to go out, you don't have a wide variety of options to choose from.

I came to Sac after living in small towns and rural areas all my life, so here's my perspective

Pros:
- the weather. yeah, the summers are pretty hot (100s), but after 4 years of college in a cloudy coastal city, it's nice experiencing 4 distinct seasons again.
- the concert venues. I'm a big concert-goer, so living in a city where bands always play is nice. there are several large venues and plenty of smaller theaters. if sac gets skipped over on a tour, san francisco is only an hour and a half drive away. I'm used to driving hours to get to a show, so this is a big plus.
- culture. I've heard Sac is the most culturally-integrated city in the US, and it shows. people from all races and cultures live here, and live side-by-side in the same neighborhoods without much incident.
- the job market. from service jobs to government jobs, it won't take long to land a job.
- TREES. sounds stupid, but all the trees (I've heard Sac is 2nd only to Paris in the # of trees within the city) make the city a little less concrete jungle-like
- public transportation. this might fall under "con" in the list of those who come from cities with more developed public transportation, but I find it to be more than adequate, especially if you work right downtown as I do.
- cost of living. again, coming from the coast, the rent prices here are heavenly.
- activism. if you're into government or politics at all, the capital city is the place to be.

Cons:
- CRIME. be sure you crime map any area you're thinking of living before you rent or buy. some areas are a definite no-no.
- uh... it's a city! it's not quaint or close-knit. if you're looking for a college town atmosphere, go to Davis.
- TRAFFIC. needs no explanation; it is simply horrible.
- BAD DRIVERS. Allstate came out with this study recently that puts Sacramento near the bottom of the good driver list. on average, they say every driver in Sacramento will get in an accident every 4 years. drivers are rude and impatient.

Cons: it's expensive?? really? I just moved here from the bay area 6 months ago, this is NOT expensive. Compared to the Midwest yes.....ok. The only real con for me has been allergies and the 100 plus days 4 months straight in the summer. It is very, very affordable here and you can buy a really nice home for pennies on the dollar compared to the bay area, but the horrible summers for me cancel that out. I am moving back to the bay area.

Sacramento is a wonderful city. It's one of the best places in the country to raise children. It has been carefully planned and has more amenities than I can list (you will find more in my other answers about Sacramento.) It is a beautiful city that has won the "Tree City USA" more times that I can count. It's a short drive from San Francisco, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and a lot of even closer small, historic towns worth exploring. It even has beautiful freeway plantings.

Cons: hmmm...uhh...errr...ahh...there must be something wrong with it. I just don't know what that is.

I will be moving to Sac this october. I visited a few months ago and I really like it. There seems to be a lot to do, but if you're used to like L. A. it's kinda not the same though. L. A. has more going on IMO.

Something many people may not know, Sacramento has one of the highest asthma rates in the NATION. This is because we live in a valley and all the pollution that we create stays in the valley and pollutes the air. Many people that are born here have asthma and even people that MOVE to Sacramento have known to develop asthma- most prevalent in children and older adults.

Ive been saying it for years
-pros are that your a couple hours from the ocean and a couple hours from the snow and casinos (i remember less traffic times when you could do it way quicker) so certain times of the year you can literally wake up and go boarding -one day and the next go to the ocean and chill easy on the beach and catch some sun
-theirs good eats here no matter what side of town your in! I've got my "spots" all over!!!:)
-its a pretty chill layed back "green" type town (compared to other cities) most people like to chill around 420 or so. (if your into that)
-theres always something to do here regardless of what people say (they just don't know) almost any weekend I can always find some kind of event or something going on with in a close drive. and if not, cool I call it down time. lol
--like above mentioned your just close to everything! less than 2hrs to S.F, less than 2hrs to Tahoe or reno 6 hrs to LA or 45 min/1hr flight 2 or 3 to anywhere in central Calif. including the small coast towns its just kinda convenient here.

--CONS-
-man its hot as H >E double hockey stick here summers can be miserable and the rivers don't cut it plus their not all that anyways.
-winters are equally crappy it can rain for days straight and this town floods!!! plus it gets freakin chilly as heck here!brrrrr! it aint no buffalo but brrrrrrrrr anyways.
-if you got allergies this ain't the place for you! yah people brag about the trees and stuff here but its miserable for those of us with allergies. most people don't know they have them in till they come here!
--- last but not least- the police! yea I said it! lol
just jerks here. dont matter if ya got a question or ouch if ya gotta go pay a ticket or something and god forbid you gotta go to court for something here! you quickly get treated like a murderer for any type ticket.
definitely a town full of police doing it for the wrong reasons!
--oh yea 1 more traffic is a nightmare here always under construction yet it never improves anything? I cant figure that part out but its true! who ever designed the freeways here 60 years ago, if not dead, should be shot! (sorry guy but you suck!)

well im done lol feel free to email me for specific questions, no prob!

Okay, from a teen's point of view, it's a cool place, but sometimes you find yourself bored because it seems like nothing changes very much. But, you're in the middle around you, San Fran 2 hours away, but also Tahoe 1 1/2 hours away...overall 8 out of 10
