We were at a party in a private community that got busted. As we were getting into our car, the police stopped and asked us if we lived there. My friend answered no, and we then had to be picked up by our parents, since we are under 18. We are in the State of Florida. Is really a law or were the police just trying to get us in trouble. No one had been drinking and no illegal substances were on us or in the car.

Minors basically have no rights.

And, once you got into a car, you lost whatever little rights you had.

Being in a car gives them the right to stop you.

As a minor your parents are reponsible for you. By the police making your parents pick you up it is more of a way to get your parents to take some responsibility then it is to get you in trouble. Police would have a much easier job if some parents would take more reponsibility and pay better attention to their kids. As a minor the police have the right to detain you and release you into the custody of your parents.

Other than the reason already mentioned the other big reason to have your parents pick you up is to make sure you dont simply just go somewhere else to party. Whether or not you specifically had been drinking or had illegal substances you were still a part of the overall illegal activity and though you can not be charge with anything a very common way for police to solve the problem is to get the parents to come pick up their kids.

Lets say for arguments sake that the police busted up this party and just let everyone leave, two hours later you get into a wreck and your parents find out that the police had contact with you and sent you on your merry way without notifying them. Can you say "lawsuit". In this sue happy world a lawyer would be all over that. Whether the parents truly cared what you were doing or not some would see this as a great opportunity to sue the police.

Police are not always able to contact every minors parents but normally at least make that attempt. The sad thing is that in my experience some of the parents dont care what their kids are doing and are just happy that they are out of their hair so they can stay home and get drunk or go out themselves. If I had a dollar for every parent that I called to come pick up their kid who was too drunk to do so I would be rich.

This is why parents provide their teenagers with mobile telephones. One of you should have been on the telephone to a parent, before they did have the chance to request this. Talking with a parent, and confirming your identity and residency, could have made this an easier situation.
Consider getting a low=cost mobile telephone, now you are out and about. It is good if you are ever stopped at the mall.

Or a penny for everytime an officer let such children drive only to receive a call to go to the scene of a deadly accident and, upon arriving, finding the same children dead.

On what grounds did they hold you? It doesn't apperar to me that they had any. Police can't deny peoples liberty like that. They may in Florida, but that is a red-neck state whose police are dumber than a nail! (for the most part)! At least that was my experience while in Florida, the only state I know where the off ramp is off the fast lane on the left!
