It's hard to explain, but i'll give it a go.

There has to be a God (in religion) because religions, typically, are groups of people or a "community" who believe in a higher or greater being or will. They worship this "force or spirit" (whether they believe they have seen it or not) and call it thier God. Religions can't really be religion without a God or something/someone they worship whether it be Bhudda, God or any sense of higher purpose or force. They believe that there is more to life and that they have a purpose, acting in the will of their God.

Lol, as i said before, it is difficult to explain.

Thanks for the good question ;)

No they don't numb nuts. Buddhism is not based on deities, although SOME Buddhists revere the Buddha as a God but many do not. They just consider him awakened, and anyone can become a Buddha (which means awakened)

And some Hindus do not have gods, or in the least, they are not crucial.

Edit

21 June.

The god of the religions often create barriers between humanity. If god is not divine, there is no point worshipping him.

We have a divine thing which is within us, and that is our soul. If we accept this fact, (and not just only nod for the sake of it) ie feel its (soul's) presence at all times, a time will come slowly that we will start realizing the real God.

So while we can follow culturally the religions as are there, we should practice the religion of the soul for understanding the eternity, and then this question will not exist.

In religion and spirituality (I prefer the latter myself), the main idea is belief. The definition of religion is 'to believe in some thing, person or idea greater than one self'. I think that even if a person isn't religious or spiritual, believe in a god, or someone greater than one's self is healthy. Humans are, no doubt, the domineering life on earth, but are also beginning to take life as if any and everything is owned by man. Especially here in America (in my experience). Man is becoming more and more convinced that 'it' knows everything, can do anything, and has the power to create and inevitably destroy others' lives. Believing in a higher being, or god, tends to keep one grounded in that they are not in control of everything and have consequences to pay.

It's the same as a child looking up to a parent and fearing punishment for disobeying. The problem is, as adults, the law is typically the only fear people have, and that is just as corrupt as people are. So, there in lies the belief that if there is a god, and that if 'we' behave, there will be a 'reward' for doing our best and obeying the laws of our religion.

No. They don't. You musr understand that there are more definitions to words than the one you want to focus on:
re·li·gion
–noun 1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.
6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.
7. religions, Archaic. religious rites.
8. Archaic. strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to one's vow.
—Idiom9. get religion, Informal. a. to acquire a deep conviction of the validity of religious beliefs and practices.
b. to resolve to mend one's errant ways: The company got religion and stopped making dangerous products.

By at least the third definition, Atheism is a religion. And they, especially here conduct religious activity religiously. The more an Atheist trys to reason with Christians and others, even proselytizing for Atheism, the more religious that they are being.

So many regulars that come here who are Atheists are Religious in their activity.

Being in denial doesn't mean that it's not true.

Religion is based on God. Every religion has its god. The mere fact that you ask this question reveals your ignorance. Did your ignorance lead to your being an atheist or are you ignorant because you are an atheist? Being an atheist means you are Godless, meaning you have no Religion. Meaning you don't believe in something bigger than you, than everything. To each his own though, to each his own. Respect for each ones beliefs is what is lacking in todays world. Why the world is still in so much trouble. Not because of religion itself. But because of the lack of respect and common human decency.

religion: A strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny

by the wordweb dictionary

if there was no god in a religion you couldn't call it a religion just a philosophy or a way of living at most you can have faith

many people here are saying there are religions without gods but it sounds like the word religion contains god

Everyone has a religion!!! That's a fact by definition. Religion is a belief or creed. Whether you believe in the Easter Bunny or beleive thier is no God. Whatever you believe, that is your religion. The question I like to hear people ask, "Is what are you trusting in?" Whether that is Jesus, money, or self. that is your true religion. Not what you claim. Be Blessed!

Religion is doing something over and over again. Like going to church or as the lady above states practicing Budism. If you answer the questions on here every day, or at a set time you are considered doing it religiously. So no you don't have to have a gawd to have religion.

There doesn't have to be. Take Buddhism for example. I notice that it's a popular opinion around here that Buddhism is not a religion, but a philosophy. Still, I have to respectfully disagree.
