Why don't cruise ships design netted hammock like outcroppings all around the ships so if someone falls or is pushed overboard they will land in it?

In my opinion most ships now have very sleek designs. They are not like the ships of old days. Adding a net would really make for an ugly design, to say nothing of having a drag effect on the ship as it cruised. The number of people who fall over is very small compared to the number of people cruising. My bet is its less than one percent. So the cost benefit would not justify the expense.

The recent instances of people falling over has brought this issue to the forefront. But in these cases, as far as we know, it was the stupidity of the passengers, rather than a fault in the ship design that let to the people falling over. One of the last group who fell over would not even tell how it happened. This suggest that they were doing something stupid. On one of my cruises I saw a couple sitting on a railing on a top deck of the ship. They could have easily fallen over.

People don't just fall overboard. The design is safe enough, but when you have people sneaking their own alcohol on the ship and getting drunk, then all the safety in the world isn't going to help.

These people are not "fallhing" over board by accident. They are drunk - and trying to sit up on the balcony railing. I have been on 10 cruises, and there is NO WAY you can "fall" overboard.

If they're stupid enough to fall overboard, then so be it. And what do you suggest they do with the lifeboats that will have to be removed to install these hammocks? Wouldn't it be easier for people to start taking personal responsibility then making cruiselines make their ships idiot proof?
