Running will always be a more intense form of exercise than walking. Though walking is good for you too, you won't get the same level of intensity as you will from running. The idea is not so much to burn so many calories during the workout, but to raise the RMR (resting metabolic rate) overall throughout the day so that you burn more calories at all times than you would otherwise.
When walking, or any other slower form of aerobic activity, you burn primarily free form fatty acids for energy. When exercise is intense enough, as with running, you then utilize glycogens for energy, then free form fatty acids are burned for several hours after the exercise, so this is an additional benifit of higher intensity. For maximum fat burning while retaining lean muscle, HIIT such as wind sprints (interval training) is best.
When it comes down to it, do what exercise you like to do, as you tend to stick with exercises you enjoy, but make sure you get something out of it. So, if you'd rather walk, make sure you're going at a decent pace and actually raising the heart rate.

The faster you go, the more you will burn in the same amount of time as walking. If you can walk five miles a day, but only run/jog 1, walk. You will get more done. Also, you can always mix it up. Jog one day, walk the other. Breaking it up will help keep your interest and burn more fat.

actually no, you burn more by walking... I just read an extensive study that proved that walking...not running... burns more calories per distance...
in otherwords... if you walk two miles you will burn more calories than if you run two miles.... and this is because when you run you build up momentum and actually use LESS muscle power to keep yourself going... walking uses more because you are creating less momentum...
also walking is better on your joints and spine than running... the impact on your joints from running is like a hundred times your body weight...(dont quote me on that one... I read something like that a long time ago but dont recall the exact number... but it is high)
Good Luck to you
take your time and
Enjoy your walks

Walking may be a better idea if you have a dog and the fact that you may be able to walk longer than jogging b/c jogging takes a lot of effort to keep going after you start getting hot and sweaty. and plus, it may be hard if you have a dog that might need to stop and go to the bathroom.
let me know~ : )

Always start walking, then as you add distance to your routine you can add speed. When you get bored or reach a plateau in your exercise routine, it is time for a change. That change might be the hint to let you know that your heart is ready for jogging.
Take your time, you will lose calories and weigh int either exercise. Good luck with your goal!

You burn just as many calories walking as jogging as long as the distances are the same, but jogging better enhances aerobic fitness. The abs will hurt less as you progress.

Try running six minutes, then walking four and so on and so on. I would much rather just run thirty minutes or just walk thirty minutes, but it's actually more helpful that way. And yes, I have been doing eight minutes abs too. It is....ow.

It's been proven that walking burns just as many calories as if you run. So I'd say it's safe to walk if you want

Walk for ten minutes then jog for a few minutes, then another ten walking. Depending on your fittness level.
If you can get in a pool and jog in there, its better for your joints and works you out better.
