I'm 26, healthy (at least I hope) and started drinking when I was 23. My tolerance has never changed. One beer (I'm talking Miller Lite) will get me drunk. Should I be worried? I would think by now my tolerance would have increased by now....
People say I should be happy, being a "cheap date" and all, but, I am beginning to wonder if I should drink alcohol at all..

Since I cant reply, I'll add more details.
1. I seldom drink. It's about 1-3 days a month MAX!
2. It could be a buzz, but, how many people get a buzz just from one beer?

Dear "Cheap Date"'
The first thing to consider is your race. Native Americans, and Indians of the islands in and around Alaska, seem to have a genetic difference, which disallows their bodies from processing alcohol out through their livers as normal people do. It has something to do with their metabolism of the sugars, I think. I believe this is also the reason that those races have a higher tendency towards diabetes, (nearly 50% for men over age 50.
If this does not apply to you, the next thing to question are ANY medications you may be taking, whether prescription, or over the counter. Many medications will cause drowsiness alone, (such as decongestants, allergy medications, sleep aids, etc.). Alcohol has a tendency to amplify those effects, and sometimes can cause very different reactions in some people.
If neither of these apply, the chances are that you just have a very low tolerance to alcohol. This could be genetic. Have either or both of your parents ever had a problem with alcohol? If your answer to this last question is yes, I would suggest that you try to stay from alcohol, or at the very least, recognize that you have a much lower tolerance to alcohol, and act in an according, and responsible manner.
Having been a bartender for nearly 20 years, I can tell you that you can slow the effects of alcohol by eating a fairly heavy meal about an hour or so before drinking. Be aware that your tolerance will not change, just that the effects will take a bit longer to hit you. Drinking on an empty stomach will cause the effects to hit you faster, and with a greater intensity. Another factor to consider is your weight. A person under one hundred pounds will be legally intoxicated after drinking no more than 2 beverages in an hour. This is about how fast your liver can process alcohol, (about one 12 oz. beer, one 6 oz glass of wine, or one shot or mixed drink of 1 oz of hard liquor, per hour). The more you weigh, the higher your tolerance typically is. At any rate, exercise caution when drinking, and know that you need far less than others when it comes to intoxication levels. Especially, DO NOT DRIVE!!! Not only is it dangerous for you and others, but the legal ramifications of being arrested for drinking and driving will have life altering effects.
If your situation cannot be explained by any of these answers, or a combination of them, I would suggest consulting your physician.
I hope this information helps you.

If your oriental asian, they all lack the enzyme alchoholinesterase (im pretty sure thats a bit off, but theres actually an enzyme named something similiar). So basically they cant handle too much booze.
Otherwise, it just means your a lightweight and a cheap drunk, which is good. You dont have to spend money :)
Your tolerance will slightly go up, if you keep partying. When I started, i could handle 3or4 beers, now i can handle half a 2'6. Any more than that though, then I cant walk in a straight line anymore.

I get like that too and my doctor said, of course, that I just shouldn't drink beer....so I switched to hard liquor. shocking but I can put down 5 shots before I feel a buzz. it don't matter how much you weigh or how often you drink, everyone is different and that's just how you're made. if you don't get sick or feel too bad the next day just keep having fun as you are. but it is always nice to ask a professional if you're really concerned.

People differ in their tolerance for liquor. One can also build up a tolerance for alcohol by drinking more heavily and more often, although there is a price to pay in terms of one's health. It is not worthwhile to compete with other people over the amount of booze one can consume before passing out or becoming sick. Having a drink in one's hand is a sometimes-useful social tool, but you don't have to tell anyone it is iced tea if you don't want to.

how much do you weigh, I'm 43 and I get a buzz from 1 beer. Dont worry about how much it takes if you want to drink, drink as much as you are comfortable drinking.

Everyone is different. You didn't mention your weight, sex etc, but that, along with diet can also affect your tolerance to alcohol. Also, many prescription drugs can have an effect on your tolerance.
If you are taking prescriptions, ask your Dr. about alcohol interactions. Since you recently began drinking, be careful and never let yourself be in a vunerable position. (needing a ride, finding yourself forced to drive etc)
Good luck!

Some people pretend to be drunk when they drink because it's fun. It takes around 5 glasses of cognac to knock me over on a bad day. It's my German/Irish consitution. :)

Use spray oil as an alternative to pouring. One squirt contains merely one calorie compared to 120 calories at a tablespoon. If you use oil with your cooking daily, this small change could lose that you simply stone over the year.
