You must serve a total of 8 years. There are two options. You can serve four years active duty and 4 years reserve duty or 6 years active duty and two years reserves.

As was previously stated, you will be held to an eight year obligation. There are 3, 4, and 6 year active duty options, and when I was going through training I heard rumors of an 18- and 24-month enlistments, but I couldn't say for sure what the deal is with those.

As far as a criminal record goes, you can have a rap sheet 3 pages long and still serve in the Army. You will need to write a letter explaining each offense, the outcome of each situation, and how you have grown as an individual so that you will not repeat the same mistakes.

I believe that the shortest am mount of time that can be served in the military is a 2 year contract, in which you sign up and you have no guarantee of what you will do, duty station or training,\.

If I can add to what mustangsally76 said, it is inactive reserve. It just means that they can call you back to active duty if needed in that time frame. And yes, you can serve with a misdemeanor but it's best to talk with a recruiter to get more in depth information on that.
