Up until some years ago (when their "prophet" got yet another "vision" from "God" to no longer do things this way) Mormons believed that anyone that wasn't white had sinned along the way, and God darkened their skin color. For example. The Mormons belive ( I don't know if they still believe it, because they keep changing the beliefs of their religion) that the native americans are one of the lost tribes of Isreal that sinned and consequently were turned from "holy white (lol)" skin color to "red" in skin color. They also believed that blacks were cursed and as a result of this, there skin turned dark...despite the fact that nowhere in the Bible does it indicate a curse or skin color connected to a curse?

to "Love YAhoo"---perhaps you need to read my question again, because it seems as if you are lost or not comprehending. I said IN THE PAST. Of course the Mormons have changed their rules to adapt to society. I am asking about the ORIGINAL beliefs of this "religion" called Mormanism.

to "TOM"---Do NOT give me the book of Mormons as a reference, because we all know the book is made up and a fraud. GIVE ME EVIDENCE FROM THE BIBLE BECAUSE THE BIBLE IS THE ONLY RELEVENT REFERENCE! NOWHERE in the Bible does it talk about Cain having black skin as a mark for his skin. Also, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT MODERN BLACKS ARE CONNECTED TO CAIN IN ANY WAY!! THe Cainanites don't even exist anymore. Stop pulling things out of your a-ss. Don't waste my time.

And despite some of these Mormons on here, repeating again and again that the mark of Cain was black skin, NOT ONE of you are able to give me a verse in the Bible that talks about Cain's skin turning black. All you can tell me is that Cain was marked, Cain was marked, which IS in the Bible, but there is NOTHING that talks about skin color, NOTHING. The part about skin color that you Mormons have added on is a speculation that a person that already thinks dark skin is horrible, has come to. The people that founded your "religion" came to the table already believing that white skin was good, and dark skin was bad. Therefore, anything that they find in the bible dealing with curses or anything bad, they are going to find some way to connect it with dark skin color, even though the bible, as a whole, is pretty silent concerning colors of different nations. NOWHERE does it say that "Cain's skin turned black as a mark of his curse" NOWHERE. You people came to that conclusion yourselves

LoveYahoo - If you are SO accepted as you say, how come you are segregated into a Spanish speaking ward? Maybe you aren't as accepted as you think.
I know that when I was a mormon, we tolerated the Spanish people and the 'black' people. But we all knew deep down that they were not as good as the rest of us white folks. We only put up with those people but we certainly didn't socialize with them. Anybody that talks to you - well, 75% of them, are phony and putting on a front to look good to the rest of the white folks.
The Mormon Church IS very racist. no doubt about it.
Also, Brigham Young proclaimed that the church was false by this statement (Something like this:) The day the church lets black people hold the priesthood is the day that you know this church is false.

I don't think that the color of skin was the curse, but the loss of God's presence. When you don't have the God's Spirit with you, you are in darkness.
I personally, have several African-Americans, A sister from Jamaca and some Hispanic members. I just depends on where you are. I have attended wards where I was the only white person.

We never have said that someone who isn't white has sinned somewhere along the way. you show me an article that shows a prophet or apostle saying that, then I will believe you.
We do not "keep changing the beliefs or our religion." Yes, the Native Americans are descendants of Lehi, who came out of Jerusalem before it was destroyed, making them part of the 12 Tribes of Israel (not Isreal) He had 6 sons, Laman, Lemuel, Sam, Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph. Laman and Lemuel did not listen to the teachings of their father, who was a prophet of the Lord, so God cursed them and their descendants with a skin of blackness. All through out their history they repented and God then made them white again. but if they turned back to their wicked ways, he cursed them again.
You say that no where in the Bible does it talk about a skin curse, but God placed a mark upon Cain, so that all men would know him and would not hurt him. was that mark "floating above his head" or did it affect his skin? which do you think is more probable?
and, there are more members of the Church OUTSIDE the North American continent then there are within in it. The fastest growing area is in Africa.
as to why blacks couldn't hold the priesthood for a time, God obviously did not feel they were ready. You can ask him when you stand before him to be judged.

You don't want answers, you want someone to fight with. If you were really looking for answers, you would take the info that people give you and really look into it.
If we can't use the Book of Mormon, then you aren't really looking for what us "Mormons" believe. You are looking for someone to validate what you believe!!
Stop trolling and trying to start contention. It does no one any good. Until you are ready to accept, or are ready to hear, the real answers, just leave it alone..
Oh yeah!!! By the way, I reported this question. Just so you know!
I personally know many people in the church that aren't white. I had a sister in law that was from jamaica. We also had a black branch and a hispanic branch where I used to live, so don't tell me that there aren't people of different races in the church!!

It is a seemingly racist history. Let me explain.
First you have to understand that there is a difference between an opinion and a doctrine. Contrary to popular belief, a prophet is not receiving revelation 24/7. Here is how the prophet works, when God tells him something, he then tells the common folk of the church. However, he only does this when God tells him something; God isn’t telling him crap 24/7. So when he isn’t speaking through revelation, he is speaking as a regular man, with regular opinions just like you and me.
So it was never doctrine that Black folk were decedents of Cain, just opinions.
Second, is it racist to have those opinions? No, it’s not. If I read statistics of Black poverty, and crime rates, and believed those statistics were accurate, would I be a racist? No, I would not; it is not racist to agree with statistics.
However, I would be a racist if I were glad those statistics were accurate, but if I believed those statistics were accurate and became saddened by them, than I would not be a racist.
Just as believing blacks have higher crime rates is not racist, believing that blacks are the descendants of Cain is also not racist.
So what are we left with? Opinions (not doctrines) that is not racist.
Joseph Smith was actually very Anti Slavery. However, who knows, perhaps they were racists; after all, the entire religion is false and perhaps invented by bigoted people. I really do not know.
Of course I was taught that it was never doctrine, but maybe Joseph Smith and Brigham Young did believe it to be doctrine. They believed in a lot of weird stuff, the church doesn't always teach an accurate history, so maybe the church has taught me wrong.
Finally after fiddling with the forbidden evil anti Mormon sites, I am beginning to learn that the glorified orthodox view is not accurate, and the reality is much more damming. So maybe you’re right, maybe they are racists.

You keep telling people that they aren't answering your question. You didn't ask one question in that entire tirade. Putting a question mark behind a statement doesn't make it a question. You just made a string of statements. What is your question.
Just to add a little to the discussion. Have you ever heard Joseph Smith's plan to end slavery. He wanted the Fed. Gov. to buy all the slaves and free them. The plantation owners could then use that money to hire workers. That would have saved America the bloodiest war in its history. Sounds real racist doesn't it?

Well we do have Temples in African countries. Men of all cultures, backgrounds and colors can hold the priesthood. I don't have the answer for why it was not allowed before 1978 and neither does anyone else. Mormons, exMormons and NonMormos can all speculate all the they want about why or why not. But no one knows why. You and other users who have answered this question can claim that Mormons are racist or whatever you want to. Maybe you should take a look at yourselves.

What amazes me is "prophet" Joseph Smith said he asked God which church to join and God supposedly told him join none of them they are all wrong and their creeds abominations. Allegedly the Mormon church believes they are restoring the apostate Christian church. But when you have had so many major doctrinal changes at what point does one begin to wonder how can you call anyone else apostate. If he was a true prophet would they really need to alter major doctrines so frequently. In my experience most Mormons are likable sincere people. It is with regret that I find myself at odds with them. But you cannot sacrifice truth to be polite.

I was at first brainwashed then later forced to attend the mormon religion for 21 years as my family has for generations. It is very sad but yes they are (but wont believe or admit they are) racist and sexist. I was always taught that before the creation of the world we were all spirits in a spirit world, and there was like a conflict between Gods 2 sons whos names were Jesus and Lucifer. They had a difference of oppinion (sorry I forget exactly what on) and all of us had to decide whos plan/ideas were right therefor picking who we would follow. The people who chose lucifer were sent along with lucifer went straight to hell. The people who decided to follow Jesus were white and could go to earth, and (I hate to say this but) the people who couldn't decide were able to go to earth as a Black person.
Also they explained that they were made slaves as pat of their punishment for that ( sounds like someone was feeling guilty) indecisive choice. Lastly it wasen't until recently that the last of the people who couldn't decide had died ( I have seen a picture of this man) so I believe it was in the eary eightys that a Black man could have full benefit of the church and get the priesthood. Notice I said men could, a woman who is any color will never get the priesthood and are thought to be less than a man and should be a mother "that is the highest calling for a woman".
I think this is completly disgusting and shouldn't be allowed but hey I was excomunicated at age 15 because I was raped by a man in my church, at church in fact. I was shown their true colors all along but didn't realize it until I was 15. I mostly know about the story about African Americans, it is the worst case of racism. As far as other races they have color as like a mark as to show they made this wrong choice or for some other sign that shows they are tainted. In conclusion I don't recomend this church for any race I am now 25 and I still have trouble undoing the damage they did to me, so go to a religion that focuses more on love instead of guilt and judgment like the mormons do.

I'm not sure where the curse is located.. perhaps it is the Mark of Cain... Cain was cursed for killing his brother but the Mark (skin color) was given to him for his protection that all might know that anyone who killed him would be cursed 7 times over... or something like that...
There is similar scripture in the Book of Mormon talking about the Lamanites.
