I know I'm not the only person that has noticed that soft drinks ranging from Sprite to Pepsi are getting stronger and stronger -- I'm to the point that I want water in it to dilute it because it makes my eyes squint. What is with this?

Most drink manufacturers make syrup and sell the syrup to bottlers, who mix the syrup with water and package the resulting mix into bottles or cans for consumption. I believe that, in an effort to improve quality control (and sales of the syrup), the manufacturers now have minimum concentration standards that are richer in syrup than they used to be. Consequently, you taste the flavor more.

It is possible that your taste has become more sensitive, and in fact the formulation hasn't changed at all. It depends on the time frame you are using as a reference.

They have been making it with more syrup in Europe and the Baltics for a number of years, now they are doing it here because it was quite popular.

More and more drinks are becoming available. Making it stronger and more potent makes it more likely you will stick to your brand and not switch. Another great reason to give it up all together.

Back in the 60's they used to be even stronger than they are now. And alot sweeter. Back then they were made with pure sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

As a child or a youngster your taste buds haven't fully developed to the nuances of flavors. That's why kids can eat really sweet stuff that would make our teeth rattle. As you age your taste buds become more sensitive to this.
