I would have to say that dc Talk has had the most influence on Christian music throughout the years, especially the Jesus Freak album. In their day they did more to make Christian music appealing to the younger crowd. They weren't afraid to tackle real issues. Their lyrics were real and thought provoking.

Also, I'd have to say that Audio Adrenaline and Third Day would be two other pretty influential bands.

I'll have to go with U2.

U2 is not a Christian band inasmuch as they are a band made up of Christian members. That being said, they are the only band to successfully integrate a Biblical and spiritual message into the secular music world within the past 30 years.

Audio Adrenaline, Third Day, Casting Crowns, D.C. Talk... they all played predominately Christian mediums. Their music is played only on Christian stations and their concerts are usually at Christian music fests and held for church youth groups. The message may be filled with praise and glory for Christ but it is only going to fill the ears of those who are already Christian. No non-Christian teenager was ever led to Christ by simply deciding one day to turn on the local Contemporary Christian station and see what was up.

During my teenage years, I was depressed, self-serving and angry at the world. I couldn't stand a lot of the "Christian" bands my friends listened to. I thought their music was watered-down, cheesy and it failed to move me at all. It wasn't until I heard U2 boldy put a message about their faith into a world where the idea of Christianity is not commonly accepted that I was moved. I still credit U2 and their music as being more influential towards my salvation that anything that any church, pastor or youth minister ever showed me.

I'm not sure if that's praise for the band or a slam on the modern-day church but however you interpet it, I still think U2 is more influential simply because they reach a wider audience.

If you are looking for time honored artists who brought Christian music into the mainstream, then I would say Michael W. Smith or Amy Grant. If you are looking for current day bands that are making a difference in our worship, bringing us closer to God, then I would say Casting Crowns, Third Day or Mercy Me.

I'd agree. dcTalk pretty much rescued Christian music from the horrors of artists like Sandi Patty and Steven Curtis Chapman. dcTalk taught us that music can glorify God without making us want to shove pencils in our ears.
