I'm a voice performance major at a two-year college. I will be expected to give a sophomore recital next year. I'm working on getting some repertoire worked on now, but...what do I wear? Do I go formal? Semi-formal? Or what?

Thanks.

I'll be singing opera arias and other classical pieces.

Be safe. Musician black (a dress or black pants and a cute top) semi-formal. Nuteral makeup and maybe a headband to pull it all off. And headbands can't get in the way of sax playing.

I've been in this same predicament myself! First and foremost, make sure that you're comfortable in whatever you choose to wear. This might be obvious, but make sure it doesn't interfere with your breathing! Regardless of formal/semi-formal, etc., a classic choice for recital attire would be something black. Beyond that, I would consider the venue. Will your recital be held in a small recital room, large performance hall, auditorium, etc.? Will it be held in the afternoon or evening? Those last two factors would likely be the deciding ones as to whether or not to go formal. If your recital is being held in a smaller venue in the afternoon, I would suggest less-than-formal, perhaps a toned-up version of business attire. A nice suit should do the trick. Avoid too much jewelry, as you don't want your appearance to detract from why everyone's really there: your voice! If its in a larger venue in the evening, feel free to go all out. Grab that formal dress, get yourself dressed up to the nines, and have a great time. Now go knock their socks off!

i'd say it probably depends on what type of music you're doing. if you're doing more classical/opera/etc., then i would go more formal, but otherwise, just dress like you would for a job interview...just look professional, but not overwhelming.

black knee length skirt with matching fitted jacket, white blouse, black Mary Jane shoes, pearl necklace and earrings, red lipstick. It's very classic and professional, but still young and fun.
