2.5 - 2.8 qt. get it in the middle of the marks on the dipstick. dont put what the first poster said! I use 20w 50 its what most manuals recomend.

Just Slightly Under 3 QT if you have a '66 Beetle with F tagged 1300 VW motor.
would recommend 5W30 for winter Straight 30 for summer. Thats what I run in mine.

BE CAREFULL SOME OF THE OLDER BUGS ONLY TAKE 1.75 qts. AND DON'T HAVE A FILTER BUT A SCREEN IN THE BOTTOM I WOULD START WITH THAT AND CHECK THE OIL LEVLE BEFOR ADDING TO MUCH
ITS EASYER TO ADD THEN REMOVE

I am not sure how much, but I suggest you use straight 30 grade mineral based oil. It can cope with the sometimes higher temps of the lovely aircooled engine!!!!!

I go with the 4 quart guy.. AND I recommend adding them one at a time and checking the dipstick after each one. Seems to me it is NOT measured in quarts but liters which means that the 4 quarts is not exactly right.
