How would you recommend that I stop him from spitting out what he is drinking? No matter what he has (milk, water, or juice) he will take a sip and leave it in his mouth just so he can spit it out. It doesn't matter whether I am in the the room with him or not. Of course, it's easier to do if I leave. The usual punishments haven't work like time-outs or even spanking. If he does it I will just give him water the next time so at least he won't stain the carpet! It's like no matter how much I talk to him he doesn't understand it's wrong. I will tell him before I give him a cup that he shouldn't spit it out. It doesn't even help when I catch him in the act, either.

Have a spitting out contest in the tub and enjoy that he is 3 years old. He is experiementing and that is how they learn and grow. Join in the fun mom! He isn't hurting anything. and he will stop on his own a lot sooner than you trying to force it.

Give him a bottle. Explain to him that he cannot have a "big boy cup" if he can't drink like a big boy. Explain that big boys don't make messes with their drinks, they drink them.
He may think the bottle is cool the first time or two you give it to him, but by the end of the day, as long as you offer him only the bottle, he will be begging for a normal cup.
Go ahead and give him his cup if he asks, but the second he spits out his drink, take it away and hand him the bottle.
Within a week, he will stop playing with his drink completely, and you will not have even had to raise your voice.

Could there be soap residue in sippy cup. Anyway, I'd have Dad play a game where he takes the cup away and pretends to drink, then maybe child would want his cup back. Be sure to smile never punish. oj could be acidic, try apple, or choc milk.

Good luck with that one. My son is 5, also high functioning Autistic, and he understands not to do it. It's more so the stimulation of them watching it project at their will out of their mouth. Keep reprimanding him, and know like most things, it'll pass in time...

Well if your son is doing this then he might be creating a habit of it and since he continues he must not grasp the concept of drinking. so if he continues then try and trick him into drinking. first that comes to mind is don't give him any thing to drink but that might be too cruel.

it sounds cruel, but don't give him anything to drink. don't. tell him that he can't have anything to drink because he doesn't drink it anyway, he just spits it out. he'll whine and he'll freak out but if you stick to your word he'll know who's boss.
and if you give in to him, he'll be the boss. he'll walk all over you. you don't want that.
if he does have a drink after many "i promise mama's" and spits it out, just take the drink away. he'll know why. and if he doesn't when he is finished throwing his fit you can explain to him what happened.
it will work. i had to resort to this with my daughter...a two year old.
