first of all, it sounds like your a moron and a coward. As far as how good the Army is, well, it is the best trained Army in the world. Take away the fact that we have the best training facilities and trainers, most soldiers have spent more than one tour in Iraq or Afghanistan. There is no better training than real combat.
As far as success goes, we could be very successful if we didn't care about collateral damage. If we didn't worry about killing innocent people, then we could destroy everything in our path. No insurgent could withstand our wrath if the "gloves" were off.
To the person who was whining about oil being the purpose of this, I say we could only wish. That would be idea; we invade and take what we wanted as past victors had, then gas would not be $3/gallon.
The most common fact that keeps soldiers going is that everyday we fight there is one more day we have no combat within our borders. The safety of citizens, even those who coward behind there computers to make slanderous remarks, is our ultimate goal. So, before you make ignorant comments about those who keep you safe think about where you would be with out them.

The surge isn't there to win, it's to keep the enemy off balance till more Iraqi troops and police are trained. So far 7 out of 18 providences have been turned over to Iraq and Iraqi troops and police are functioning on their own in 17 out of 18 providences. I see all 18 providences being handed over to Iraq around May of next year.

It is still not enough troops to do the occupation/pacification of Iraq right

The "40 to 1" formula is not been followed:

so I would be surprised if this works!

Now in open combat we are second to none!!!! no other fighting force in the world can defeat us in an open conflict, that is why they wait until we win THEN engage us in guerrilla warfare were we are deficient due to Not having enough troops, US military is TOO small today!

and as for abusing prisoners....they deserve it!, they do far worse to our people:

so in my book if we catch them, BEAT THEM hard!!!!!!

if they kept politics outev the army then yes, we are just as good as the movies. since the army is a more political thing then ever then its gonna be just as hard as its been. the problom is the media, they report the wrong stuff which makes us hafta be more and more humain (by that i mean this, just let us kill the enemy with what we have rather then outlawing one of our machine guns and making the other a vehical only gun) if we were aloud to simply kill we would be a wonderfull army.

Truth of it all is, that Bush is only sending troops over there to protect his oil interests. His father did it during that administration, hence Operation Desert Storm. Our troops are not over there to do anything but that, even if they and the general public have been told otherwise. In other words, we will not be successful. We went over there to look for weapons of mass destruction, found none, so mission accomplished. Then we stayed to hunt down Hussein, found and captured him... so mission accomplished there too. There will always be someone to fight there because of how the middle east generally has an anti-western philosophy and wants to cut off US export of oil. Its more of who is willing to stay the longest than it is who can win a battle, and frankly, I think its Vietnam all over again. Our army is well trained, but that is the terrorist factions' home territory. We would not have a chance if they really tried to fight back.

The troops will only be as successful as the politicians will allow.
