"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives."

There is an interesting verse in 1 John 1:10
" If we say that we have not sinned we call Him a liar and His word is not in us"

Yet earlier in 1 John 3:6 we see this..."Everyone who abides in Him does not sin, everyone who sins does not see Him or know Him"

Two very amazing verses that seem to contradict one another and sort of ties in to your question.
But truly I believe that not habitually sinning and having a life above sin has everything to do with Abiding in Jesus Christ. Having an abiding Life means that what is passing through the Vine is passing onto the Branches. If there is sin that comes up.. because you have an abiding kind of life in the Lord, then He quickly alerts you of this sin through your conscience and the Blood of Jesus is quickly applied, Keeping you in fellowship and abiding.

But if you are NOt abiding in the Lord and say that you don't sin then you're simply a liar and its not ME telling you this.. THis is the Word Of God.
The only way to live above sin is Abiding and having the Blood applied to you all the time.

Belief is irrelevant. We all sin. No one is perfect. Whether you believe in religion, God or whatever doesn't effect that. You can believe that you can fly but you'll change your mind somewhere around the time of impact.
Want to know the Truth? There is only one Truth: Christ Jesus. Whether you believe or not, you will be judged. It's up to you. It's a little thing called 'free will'.

If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous One. He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.

You can't be a sinner if you don't believe in the concept. Not all religions have sin. In my experience most people that do believe in sinning are the ones doing it. They feel that if they confess their sins to God they will be forgiven so therefore don't see the need to regulate their own behaviour. Whereas those that don't believe in sin are more likely regulate themselves because they don't have someone excusing their actions.

I'd say they are liars, because everyone has sinned, and fallen short of the Glory of God. That includes me.

Jesus Bless You.

Fellowship with God
5 Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. 6 If we say, "We have fellowship with Him," and walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say, "We have no sin," we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say, "We have not sinned," we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. Sin is a term used by a few religions. It equates to the words " law and rule" in our secular world... and thoses who use the term are quite often the ones who violate it.

Some who repeat the statement you've cited are probably liars... others may not be.

People are just people, after all, aren't they?
