I'm not sure about lambs and sheep. But I have read where Jacob placed markers before cattle, and that affected the color of the calves that where born. I'm quite sure that this is the foundation for much superstition throughout the ages, but it could as well be a reference to genetics, and selective breeding. Blood, and bloddlines where very important to that culture, as they are today among farmers, and other animal breeders. What we view as arcane, may very well have been simple tabulations.
