I don't know if I am wording it right. I want to know how much state and federal government taxes gasoline in hopes of figuring how much a gallon of gas would be if it were not taxed by government.

US gas taxes are quite low. Depending upon the state, the pump price would be between 25 and 50 cents lower if there were no tax at all. By comparison, gas taxes in Europe average about $4.00 per gallon and pump prices are around $7.00 per gallon.
