Fleas can live in carpet, the crevices in hardwood flooring, upholstery, grass, even come inside on your clothing if you've been out in the yard and it has fleas. They don't actually LIVE on the animal that is it's blood source, they just hop on it to feed, then they will drop off and live close by so they can return to feed again and lay eggs. Gross huh?
If you are having a flea problem with your pet/household, you have to stop it at the source of food-treat your pet with one of the topical solutions that you put on their skin (part their fur so you can apply it directly to the skin) at the scruff of their neck (so they can't reach the area to lick it off). These medications get into your pets bloodstream and kill the fleas and/or sterilize them so they can't lay anymore eggs so the surviving fleas will only live a few days which is their normal lifespan and then when they die they won't have reproduced, thus stopping the infestation. It may take a little while to control this because only the fleas that are feeding off the medicated animal will be affected. All pets must be treated and it's important to wash their bedding (and yours too if they sleep with you!) in hot water to kill any fleas.
Good luck.

I had a really bad flea outbreak in my house earlier this year for the first time ever, we have 3 dogs and a cat and we'd never had a problem like this before, but anyways, it was so bad every room was terribly full of them. They CAN live on the floor, but the important thing to know is that they look for cloth.
If you have this problem get any cloth stuff off the floor. Stuffed animals, blankets, clothes. And if you have rugs that's an even bigger problem, fleas will lay their eggs in the rug and it'll get out of control in no time.

Adult fleas need a food source of blood like a human or animal. They can jump large distances to find a food source and can go over hard floors etc. Flea eggs can be found in grass & carpets though.

Just remember tho a flea needs a blood host to live, they do lay their eggs in your carpet, furniture, etc.... and the eggs can lay dormant for 12 months, they hatch when stimulated by change in weather, movement ( walking ) on carpet. It's freaky to have a flea infestation in November, but it can happen. So make sure what you use on your animal < revolution, advantage > also have your home done professionally as well and make sure they use stuff that will sterilize hatching eggs and kill off existing ones. ..... Luck :-)

fleas don't lay eggs on hard surfaces and have no intention of living on a hard floor~ fleas live on animals and lay eggs on them and suck there blood to survive almost like a mosquito~ fleas do hop off of the animals onto to other objects if they hop onto a couch or a carpet they can lay eggs on there and the eggs may hatch and hop and hop around until it finds something with blood to suck or it will just die~ if a flea does land on you it will suck your blood like i said like a mosquito and then leave because you don't have enough hair on you to survive on~ so other words if a flea don't find an animal or you for blood it will die but a flea can not just survive living on furniture of carpeting without there food!

Fleas mostly they like warm porous surfaces, such as fur/skin on a dog or other animal. it's definitely a possibilty....... b/c then they can just jump onto the back of the dog...so yeah.......i'm sure they could live on harder areas....if u want to double check go to animalplanet.com and do a quick engine search...good luck and God bless

Adult fleas live on the pet--they need a source of blood to survive. They can't live long off the pet.
