Obviously something more than friendship is involved here. I would say, if you need to get something back, I would do that before breaking anything off. There is no way to let someone down easy. I can say that from experience. If they have their heart set on you, you can pretty well expect an emotional response from being dumped, no matter what your approach. It may seem okay at first, but I wouldn't expect to maintain any kind of genuine friendship. The only exes who would ever remain friends would be "waiting in the wings" for something more. When they either lose interest or realize it isn't going to happen, they will be gone.

A lot depends on the kind of person he is. If you think that he might keep your belonging out of spite, ask for it and get it back first. THEN break it off.
As for breaking it off, be honest but be kind. Tell him some of the things you like and appreciate about him. Then tell him about things that you don't feel are going well (without blaming him). Tell him that you don't feel you're finding what you need in this relationship. Wish him well, and try to end it in a positive way so that you can still be friends. You shouldn't burn bridges if you don't have to. Friends are always good.

Just be honest, but not brutal. Be fair and let him understand why your reasons for breaking up the friendship and if you feel so strongly abou it, don't back down and don't let him convince you otherwise, otherwise you'll feel like you have to go through this all over again later. Also, when you're done explaining to him your feelings, you can then ask for whatever he has of yours that you want back. There's just no simple way of saying it to him, just do it. Good luck!

Why would you want to break off a friendship?? I could understand if its a relationship but a friendship. Do you have so many friends that you are just dumping them whenever? But if you have to dump him tell him up front what you want and ask for whatever it is that he has. Don't try to sugar-coat it to spare his feelings he will think there is still a chance. Do it like a bandaid, real quick.

Say this::::
"I want to break off this relationship. I am no longer comfortable with it. I did not know any other way to tell you than just telling you STRAIGHT. I would like to get ______ back from you on tomorrow. I hope you find someone else, and I wish you all the happiness in the world. Good bye."
If he gives it back, fine.
If he does not, choke up the loss and buy another one. You have learned a lesson: Never give someone something valuable to you.

Well if it comes down to it, go get it then break up with him, cuz if u already went out with him, u can stand it a lil longer and then just get it over with, say what u have to say, and get off tha phone....or whatever! But he truly has feelings for you then u may not wanna rush into it, just explain how u used to like him (if u did) and then say ur feelings has changed......

Tell him that you don't feel the relationship going anywhere, and that the dynamics have changed. Make sure that he knows you still want to be friends if that's something you want and make sure you tell him how important the thing he has is to you and ask if he would please return it.
Good luck!
Wait.... is this a relationship or friendship. If relationship, do what I said. lol

Don't break it off until you have your stuff back. Arrange to meet to do something or talk and get it and when you have it, then let the person down as nicely as possible.

When he calls tell him you need what he has back asap, in a nice way. If it fits in your mailbox, just tell him to drop it in there and have a letter with his name on it in there too explaining everything.
I had an ex that had a CD of mine, he bought it over after 3 months of my bugging him, he was drunk off his a**, but I wasn't home so it all worked out nicely.

I think you should meet at his house, or whever he has your thing. This way you can get your posession back, and you can have a talk face to face. It seems hard but if you were close friends or in a relationship, it is the best way to end things.
