I help those in need all the time. I do not do it based on a specific religious belief necessarily, although I do believe the good you do in this life can only benefit you more in the next. I help those in need because I know in an instant I could be in their place. I heard once that we are all 1 or 2 catastophes away from losing everything. I try to remember that always. I also like the idea that someone out there that I have helped will remember my kindness and pass it on to others when they are in better shape. Sometimes my 'help' is just a shoulder to cry on, or using my professional skills to make someone's life better.

It depends on the situation and what they "need." A person who is on a street begging I don't help because they are relying on what others have and not their own ability to provide for themselves. I won't offer money or food, but will offer to help find work. A person who is stranded on the road, I may help depending on where it is. If somebody is being outnumbered and cornered I will step in if that person is in the right or just being attacked for no reason. I help those who deserve help, not those that feel they are entitled to it.

Personal beliefs play a big role for many people and subconsciously dictates their actions. My beliefs would tell me to help anyone in need regardless of the situation that put them in that position, but common sense and other issues prevent me. I have helped and will help, but won't be taken advantage of nor will I be guilt tripped into doing something I otherwise wouldn't.

Yup. It is good to do and that good comes back 10 fold. At an airport a stranger left behind a bad and I was able to flag them down b4 they left without it.
At a different airport, I almost lost my daughter and a stranger helped me by grabbing her hand and bringing her to me. It comes back around 10 fold.

Yes, I do.
And yeah -- I'm an atheist and I know prayer does NOTHING. It's up to me to make a difference, so I do.
