You will need a machete or similar strong, sharp knife and a screwdriver.
First remove the husk completely. To do this, use the machete to split the husk at the top of the coconut and then tear the husk away by hand. If your store-bought coconut is already de-husked, of course, skip this step.
At the top of the coconut you will see three or four "eyes", soft, round depressions. Break two of these by placing the screwdriver's tip on each and hitting the handle sharply with the heel of your palm.
Drain the coconut water into a tumbler or similar vessel.
Now hold the coconut so that the "eyes" are towards the tips of your fingers. Hold the machete in your other hand so that the sharp edge is upwards. Hit the coconut sharply on the side with the blunt edge of the machete. If this doesn't crack the coconut on the first go, revolve it and hit it again.
Once it cracks use the machete to lever the two halves apart.
This is the neatest way to open the coconut. A more clumsy, but still effective, way is to smash it against a hard rock after draining the water. This will smash it into several pieces and you may lose some of the meat.
Hope this helps.

CRACKING A COCONUT
You are shopping and you see that there are some fresh coconut.
You pick one up with lofty aspirations of sweet desserts.
As you are looking at them you have no idea how to pick one out.
The easiest way to pick out a fresh coconut is to shake it. If you can hear juice inside it is fresh.
If you don't hear anything, pick out another one. It will be too old and rubbery.
You get it home, and you look at it, where do you start?
The easiest way to crack a coconut is to grab a screwdriver and a hammer.
Place the screwdriver tip into one of the "eyes" and strike the end of the handle gently with a hammer until you have a hole.
Repeat the process for a second "venting" hole.
Now pour out the juice into a glass and reserve for later use.
Place your empty coconut into the freezer for at least an hour.
When it is good and cold and you are ready to get cracking, get your coconut and wrap it in an old dish towell.
Using your hammer gently start tapping on the shell all over.
Gently increase the pressure of the hits until you crack the shell.
When it breaks open, you can remove the white meat from the shell and prepare it for your recipe as needed.

You have answers covering standard methods ,how we do it India may be of interest, coconuts are broken before offering in temples & places of worship & at special functions, this holds both religious & social significance. Granted an adept hand is required ,it is just held in the hand & knocked against a hard surface, usually on the floor, at it's periphery,,the nut is rotated slightly to change the spot of impact & given another knock, two or three such attempts make a crack ,water is allowed to flow into a glass or other vessel kept handy,if it is for domestic use,in religious ceremonies it is allowed to flow over a required area.Another such knock & the two halves fall open.at a temple one half is offered to the diety while the other half is taken by the person making the offering.

Poke holes through the "eyes" and drain into a cup. This is delicious if filtered through paper and drunk cold.
Place the coconute in a vice and saw through. Some people would hit it with a hammer but this can be messy and dangerous.

Get someone else to do it!!!
Failing that, bash it down on a spike. Or just use a hammer (outside the house).
