I recently got a green cheek, he's just a baby but sometimes i think he's trying to mock sounds but i'm not sure.
How long does it take a green cheek(or any lesser speech gifted parrot) begin to try mocking you?
Does it happen within months or is it usually a year or more before they do this?

Not all parrots (or, in this case, parakeets) will talk; some will and some will not. My sun conure (3 years old) does not talk but will chuckle and communicate in her own unique way. My blue crown will talk in a hoarse manner that is distiguishable to only me. Having said that, try practicing chosen words or phrases with your bird on a ritualistic basis. It may require a lot practice and patience but that is what is needed. Good Luck and enjoy your new friend!

Hi!

I have a maroon bellied conure, which is very very similar to a green cheek conure. We got our conure as a baby also. Give him a little while to adjust to his new settings and get comfy, just always make noises or whistles around him...one day he will shock you and mock you!! haha

My conure and I now have a game that he likes to play, he makes a whistle and wants me to anwser him. If I don't he does it louder and louder until I do, kind of like hes yelling at me.

They are joy to have around and I wish you the best of luck with your conure!

He probably IS trying to mock your sounds. Six months is NOT too young for him to be doing this.
It takes a lot of repetition to teach them to talk. Our green Cheek had a vocabulary of nearly 100 words and phrases.
Do NOT let ANY one tell you that they are not capable of talking, because with attention from you and your family, you will be amazed at how much he will learn.
HANDLE him allot EVERY day if you want him to be tame and don't EVER let anyone yell at him.

Your baby is practicing talking. Keep encouraging him and tell him what you want him to say. I LOVE YOU is good and so is I am momma's baby. In less than a year you will hear real words.

Our green cheek is about 2 yrs. old. We acquired her about 1 yr. ago. Since she has lived with us, we hear her saying "Thank you", as we say that to her frequently. We also say "Bye, bye", when covering her cage. She has yet to say that. My son feels he hears her say "Come here".
