150 years ago, we didn't know about bacteria. No clue. It wasn't understood until Louis Pasteur determined that germs caused disease.
You are asking the same questions that scientists ask. You have, however, asked this in the Religion & Spirituality section, where we are mostly humanities majors, not biologists or physicists. Would you come to R&S to find out what opus number was Mozart's 40th Symphony? I think not. You're asking us to play to our weakness. Quite frankly, you're being unfair.
So let me suggest two things:
1. If you are serious about wanting to know the current evidence-based understanding on the origins of the universe and on evolutionary theory, there are excellent descriptions found at http://www.talkorigins.org .
2. Consider that you are proposing (not so subtly) that anything that is not explained is a place for God to be discovered. This is commonly referred to in ontology as "the god of the gaps" theory. It typically assigns God to any blank space that science has not yet reached useful conclusions. Remember what I said about disease? Before bacteria were discovered, it was assumed God was punishing the ill, or that they were demon possessed, or some other supernatural phenomenon caused sickness. This is the same god of the gaps.
Science never assumes, and should never assume, anything is supernatural. The purpose of science is to discover through measured observation, testing, and repetition what natural causes lead to our natural world. If you impose a statement "God caused it," then this stops the search for knowledge, because God is ultimately unknowable. This is the reason that the "god of the gaps" theory is discounted among learned ontological academicians, and is ignored by science.

If by life you mean the Universe 1)They can't because the Universe had a cause and cannot pop into existence from nothing. Which, is what atheists are now arguing in favor for.
If your talking about abiogenesis (non matter into matter) It can't be done. Even the simplist of life has information at the botom (whether RNA or DNA) IT is information. Nature can make paterns not information. Those are the two beginning problems among many that the atheist has to work against.

Please google Miller Urey and understand how the world can be created.
Oh yeah and everything that has been assumed to be been by god in history has been proven to actually have scientific origins. Each time that science has come up against the bible the various churches have denounced this science and each time after a long period science has won. Gravity, the sun not revolving around the earth, and eventually evolution.

Why is it that people expect all atheists to have advanced degrees in biology and physics?
I'm a writer, honey. I don't have the time, energy, or interest to learn advanced microbiology and investigate the beginnings of life on Earth. I assume that when the scientists figure it out, I'll read about it and then I'll know the answer.

Because they are careful about what they think they figured out.
evolution does occur with non-living things. All systems eventually reach equilibrium. Unstable compounds or atoms have a shorter life span than stable ones. The rarity of Uranium on this planet combined with the extreme frequency of iron and lead is an example of 'atomic' evolution.

um...single cell organisms evolved into multicellular organisms..
EDIT: the single cell was made of different organelles. man i hate biology. those organelles are made of proteins etc. the proteins are made of molecules and atoms.
i hope this is sufficient detail. and i agree with the guy who said "does god magicked it win by default?'
EDIT 2: are u being sarcastic when u say that explains everything?

Why can't fundamentalist Christians prove that God slapped two modern looking humans down here...and those two populated the earth while simultaneously avoiding breeding their children with their own siblings?
Belief in a theory doesn't make it fact for fundies any more than it makes it fact for athiests or scientists.

We can't just automatically know everything all at once. We're not PSYCHIC. You need to look at the evidence that's available to you. (We're not going to just "settle" for a made-up answer because we don't understand something.) At least we have the courage to say "We don't know yet" rather than making something UP. I think that someday we WILL know, but right now we don't. But not knowing does not mean that we're automatically going to attach a supernatural significance to it.

Okay, it was like this. . . your papa stumbled up the steps of your ma's trailer, stepped carefully over several large-eared hound dogs, rang the bell and handed her a bouquet of daisies and a six pack of Milwaukee's Best. She invited him in with a wave of her hand and a toothless grin. You were born 9 months later. Got it?

You don't have to capitalize atheist, unless it begins a sentence....
Not all of us are scientists...but most of us understand that all life began as a single cell organism...heck, there are lots of christians who believe that...so why point just to atheists...? The catholic church has recognized evolution as being true....why can't you?
