Hi! My name is Alan Gaertner. Yes, of course. you are most welcome at ANY Church service of the Mormon Church. Everyone is, regardless of Church affiliation.

A Missionary farewell is a very important thing for young men who go to serve a two year Mission. I am certain that your friend will be DELIGHTED to have you attend!

When he gets home in two years, it would be cool to be there for his WELCOME HOME! You can contrast the change that will occur in the two years that he is serving his Mission!

It would be a very special gift to him if you attend!

I didn't get to attend my son's farewell or his welome home. I wish I could have been there, but his Mom made sure I wasn't (don't ask. messy divorce stuff).

I hope you go and tell him good by, I bet he'll miss you too!

I give you a star for this great question!

A farewell is just a "missionary send-off" at church where the elder leaving for his mission speaks and friends and family are invited to come. So to answer your question, yes anyone can go.

It is perfectly fine for you to go to their farewell. I am sure that he would very much appreciate it if a non member friend supported him enough to say good bye. I know I would love it if my non member friends come to my farewell when I go.

Prior to becoming a missionary for the church, it's common but not required for the person to be invited to speak at the normal Sunday service called, "Sacrament Meeting." This is commonly called a missionary farewell. Visitors are welcome to any of these Sunday meetings.

If you were invited and you cared about the person, why not go? The family will appreciate you making the effort if you are respectful and honor their beliefs. Even if you don't follow their religion, you can respect it and be an example for others.

Actually, we're not supposed to have "farewells" anymore, especially ones held in church, but, sure, I don't know why you couldn't. The ones in church, that we're not supposed to have, are just talks by the missionary leaving and anyone s/he wants. Theh others are just like an open house or something.

Is your friend going on a mission? Unless it's taking place in a LDS Temple, you're free to go.
