We have had some experience with a couple of color printers (both HPs) and are happy to have memories of vacations by printing photos to place in albums. However, the cost effectiveness, quality considerations and ease of uploading to the various print vendors (Walgreens, Costco, Snapfish, to name a few) have led us to use those services. You might want to have a color printer for creating your own inexpensive greeting cards and that sort of project, but for family photos you will probably find, as we did, that the resolution and print quality of the professionally-printed photos is the best choice. When you consider the cost of the printer, the replacement ink cartridges, and glossy paper, I believe you'll still find that 19 cents a copy to have your best photos professionally printed beats home printing.

You will not save money by printing at home. Unless you are pretty skilled at color management and have a calibrated system, your prints will probably look better printed at the photo retailer as well as being more archival.
I print some things at home, but most at my photo lab. I do have a dedicated 4x6 printer that I use on location sometimes. It puts out pretty good prints straight from the camera card, and I have a printer for bigger sizes at home that is calibrated so the color matches from my monitor.

No Way! Printing at home is way more expensive than sending them out. Add up the cost of the printer, ink, paper... and everytime you mess one up and re-do it.. You should upload the photo to an online site anyway incase your computer crashes.

I do not print any of my own photos at home. Either I upload to Mpix.com or I make a quick trip to Walmart for instant proofs.
All of my "final" portraits go through Mpix,
Home printing is way too costly.

Depends. If you want a specific treatment of your photo-art, most likely then you have immediate feedback for how it will look. If you want home pictures to send to grandma, go to Walmart or some big chain store. Much cheaper because the ink is so expensive.
