That after over a hundred years of automotive adcancement.... the average car doesn't get more than 40 miles to the gallon? I mean, come on, the Model T got 28 in 1908!

Whoops, I meant "advancement"

I said nothing about the speed, reliability or comfort of a Model T vs any Toyota, there would be no contest. I just think it's kinda silly that all other things have advanced so much (well, somthings should have been left the way they were in the 60s) yet the MPG has only slightly increased. New cars should be faster than the early 1900s cars, AND get 5 times the milage!

Oh we had the technology to get 40+ miles per gallon even in the 70's but the government's restrictions placed on autos emissions standards have sent mileage numbers south.I had a 1971 Fiat 850 Sedan that got 40+MPG city and 46mpg highway. The only emissions junk on that car was a PCV valve, but that was before the restrictions really got started.

Wayne is right, I used to get over 30 MPG with a VW Beetle but it would be topped out at 70 MPH. Now a Corvette gets almost 30 MPG and goes 140 MPH, not at the same time, mind you. And if you're feeling really sad that you only get 40MPG and try to kill yourself by locking yourself in the garage with the Corvette engine running, it won't kill you. It won't even make your eyes water.

Not much progress? I think there has been great progress. We may be reaching the tipping point though. Can we get even greater efficiency from the internal combustion engine? There were many that said we would never get what we have now.

I think it is time to go plug-in electric for power.

Please take into account the emissions standards and the top speed of the 1908 "T" 30 mph on pavement compaired to let's say a 41 mile a gallon Toyota Corolla CE top speed of 110. Ford T hand crank Toyota self starter. Ford T 3.5" wide tires. In 1908 ford had places for three spairs and a patch kit. Totota one space saver spair stays in the trunk. Ford three pedals on the floor reverse low and high. throttle on the steering wheel. Toyota no special directions needed. Ford's tool Kit had wrenches ford used special size bolts and nuts grease gun hammer tire irons and tools weighed about 20 pounds Toyota youre lucky if you ever see the plastic tool folder with a screwdriver and lug wrench Ford light the headlights after putting in carboic and water. Toyota head lights see ahead almost a mile. Ford vibrator box that sends spark to the four spark plugs, A very new thing invented by Tomas A. Edison and Henery Ford And the Champion Company produced. In 1908 the T cost almost a years wages. And Toyota $13,500 is what? 20% of average wadges? Backward thinkers almost always look thru history wrong. We are much better off Toyota has airconditioning Ford has a Canvas top and cannot out run the neighbors dog.
