Give it a day or two. Don't excercise too much at a time. You should only feel that the effort was challenging, but not painful. When you exert force in your muscles, it creates tiny tears in its fibres. Your body then thinks that if they build a bigger, stronger muscle, then it won't happen again. That is how you build muscles. Remember, your muscles do not increase in number, they increase in size. THerefore, you have to let the muscles "build back" before exerting a lot of force on them again. I suggest excercising that particular group of muscles every other day. One more thing, fruits such as an apple eaten after a workout helps your muscles to build back up quicker. Good Luck!

Hey, it really depends on your fitness. If you are starting out 48-72 hours rest is probably needed. If you cannot perform the exercise properly due to pain, you need to wait longer. If you do not allow enough rest for your muscles, you may damage them. If they are sore, this means they are still building up so they can be stronger next time you try it. Just wait until the pain is almost gone/gone. The fitter you get, the faster your muscles will recover. Goodluck!

two days, depending on the muscle group or intensity of prior workout.
first of all, for maximum effectiveness in general, you should be maintaining a high protein diet, good overall nutrition, and lots of water. im assuming this is old news to you.
if it was a really intense workout, give the said muscle group two days to rest. for a lighter workout, give it one day. certain levels of creatine can lower it a day.
also, most muscle groups need the aforementioned one day to rest minimum. however, things like calves, or forearms, or abdominals, can be trained ever day, with body weight.
things to accelerate recovery rate-
-high protein
-creatine
-ACTIVE RECOVERY - if you did a hard squat workout, go for a light run the next day, or do two sets of 20 bodyweight squats.
-constant stretching- good flexebility is key

24 hours. That's why I would work upper body one day and lower body the next. Cardio and crunches every day.
