Common complications are annoying but not serious - nausea and vomiting, sore throat, and headache (frequently from caffeine withdrawal).

More serious complications can occur, but, fortunately, they are less common. If you smoke, you will hack and cough after a general anesthetic. It's ugly. You are also more likely to have other respiratory complications. Some asthmatics also have respiratory problems after general anesthesia.

Serious complications, like heart attack and stroke, are rare, and when they do happen, it is usually in people who were at high risk - they already had coronary and other vascular diseases.

There are a million other rare complications that can occur, and are specific to particular surgical procedures or pre-operative conditions.

Only once along time ago, they say it can not happen any more. I woke up during surgery and felt every cut in a 9 hour surgery. I could not tell them anything or signal them since the muscle relaxer they use is so strong. I have been told the new anesthesia machines can not let that happen ever again. I have had many surgeries since then and never a problem.

I vomit something horrific.
If you tell them, they will prescribe drugs to stop it while you are out.
Dont believe the stories about feeling everything. You know the stories about being cut open and feeling it all and not being able to move. They only paralyze you if you are on a ventilator, not for surgery. People are just trying to scare you. I worked on a surgical floor for 5 yrs and heard pts relatives try to scare them to death telling them horror stories. Not going to happen. People just love getting in their digs. Makes them sound big and tough.
PS I am a RN

Only epinephrine. It made me jumpy and want to run, kinda like an anxiety attack times 10....Other than that, no. I guess it depends on what your having done and what they are using on you.
