I can only speak from a Catholic perspective:
Canon 1055 of the Code of Canon Law reads as follows:
The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of their entire life, which is ordered by its own nature to the good of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of offspring, has been raised, between the baptized, to the dignity of sacrament by Christ the Lord.

Marriage is the consumation of two souls understanding the selves of each other.. Marriage is the sacrifice of selfish.
Marriage is the shared plans of two individuals (sometimes soulmates) expressing their desires and needs for each other.

My definition of marriage is a bond two people create between each other emotionally, spiritually, and physically promising to be equal partners for the rest of their lives.
