I am currently looking for an apartment with a rent range of 900 to 1200. I am trying to find an apartment in an area that does not have a high crime/gang index. If anyone can give me some advice about a good area to relocate that is not too far from Watts and that meets the above criteria will be appreciated.

So much negativity! I commend you for taking up the noble occupation of teaching.

Watts has a dreadful reputation. But I think things have improved in recent years. Just be careful where you go, especially at night.

Living in the Valley will mean a hellish commute. It's going to be tough to find something decent at that price, especially if you want luxuries like a bedroom

Consider Pasadena or surrounds, or something as near to the beach as possible.

Avoid living in or around Watts, Compton, East LA, or South Central LA.

It may help to know that Los Angeles and Santa Monica have rent control. Most other communites do not.

Thank you for dedicating you life to the teaching profession.
As many have said, in one way or another, Los Angeles has a greater need for ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers, than Spanish teachers.

Watts is a predominately Black / Hispanic area. If you are looking for reasonably safe areas to live in that aren't too distant then may I suggest: Downey, and parts of Lynwood to the east, and Gardena, Lawndale, Hawthorne, and maybe Hermosa Beach to the southwest. Everything else close to Watts is questionable.

Some of those answers are great. We do not need a spanish teacher, we need english teachers. And Watts is nothing but gangs and drugs and mean nasty people. Stay away from this area. Copestir suggestions are good.

you are going to look like a lone light bulb in the middle of nowhere. if you're still alive, after one month, come back and tell us what your opinion is on racism. i would suggest you live out of the area. when you get there you'll understand my meaning.
wear a crucifix, and good luck. it's a totally different world.

I don't know the area real well, but from what I've heard, "good areas" are few and far.
